Change of tactics

With the warm stagnant weather we are having I decided it was better to sleep in a bit, then get out after daylight and go find some birds loafing somewhere, After running a bunch of water I found enough birds in a spot to warrant setting up. I went with a simple spread of coots , widgeon and a dozen and a half cans and redheads, about 60 decoys in all.

By the time Rob and I finished setting up we had birds wanting back in.

Some days it does pay to sleep in. I sure hope we get some fresh birds soon.

I tried that the other day but never found enough birds, but I had a nice boat ride.

it sould be frozen here and it was about 50 here today. what is up with this weather.

all of our birds are so spread out that if you can find more that a couple you are doing good. guess its time to start shooting squeeks.

This picture is making look for a retirement property in Washington . Nice job your pictures always bring out my jealously!

And I thought you were going to write about going out on the salt. I'll be back of the left coast on Wednesday, you coming over?

Nice work and a beautiful bunch of birds Fred!!! I've been having the same problem over here on the east side. There are plenty of birds around, but they just aren't moving, and they are definitely not new. This weather is ridiculous. Most days this year have been Buffy shoots, just so the dog can get some work in. I have a new appreciation for those little guys and I've found a way to cook them that's actually quite tasty!

Good luck in the rest of January, and let's hope for some nasty cold weather!

Do you think the closest wigeon has some Eurasian genes in him? Seems to have a fair amount of reddish in his head.

Fred,
That is my standard MO anymore. I think since I started hunting the middle of the day that I have been finding better luck.
Nice bunch of birds!

I need to change my tactics, skunked way too many times this year. The problem is that I can't just go find birds in Maryland and set up....I have to have a blind site. I have to do something, the season is coming to a close soon and my wife is making fun of me for getting a SUN BURN on my face today................in January!

Andy , I think what your seeing is some blood,

I did have a Eurasian in the decoys one day several years ago but didn't have a gun out yet.

What type of netting are you using to back-up the grass camo?P.S. nice bag limit of ducks ,evidently they haven,t left home yet.Nothing great going on down here in Delaware, some spoonies g w teal and gray ducks Oh yes and I shot my first blue wing teal on dec.7 2011 they usualy pass thru here in sept. before our season opens. ain,t that something. Seems when the economy is slow so are the duck migrations.

Cas The plastic fencing material is from Aero outdoors, I am using it as a temporary rear cover to my boat blind, next summer I will have a canvas cover made and cover it with Rafia grass, after finishing my new boat last year Io didn't have time to get the cover made before the season opened.

Paul don't worry, from what I'm hearing we might even get a bump on the redheads and be able to shoot 3 a day next year if the numbers go up a bit!
