Coastal Black Duck Rig

Those are two of the strangest looking black ducks I’ve seen in a while.
😁
Good looking rig. Let’s see them in action in a month or so.

LOL, they are ugly black ducks. On the coast between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic there seems to be a strong association between hoodies and blacks and gives my rig a little different look while still matching the hatch. Ira Hudson and Nathan Cobb seemed to notice that a 100-150 years ago. Now I need to get cracking on a bunch of Atlantic Brant. The blacks mingle with the brant a lot at low tide on the eel grass flats. Especially on seaside behind the Barrier Islands and all that white on brant show up for miles.

excellent. It looks like they did the trick. The last time I shot a black duck was in 1984, the first time was 1978 with none inbetween. I still use black duck decoys instead of mallards even out here in the west where there aren't any.

I've never understood the want for hen mallard decoys, especially in field decoys. The mallards out here like to tuck up near or under overhanging Russian Olives. When you drive along the river all you see is the light grey and black of the drakes, you don't even see hens. Black ducks just make sense to me regardless of what we are hunting.

When we fly looking for ducks, the hen mallards are almost invisible from 500'. I think if you flew over a flock of all hens, you might miss them altogether.
