cold and windy

Cold and windy on the water today. I was good to be able to tuck down behind the dodger for protection. I had a couple birds come in and they liked what they saw this morning. Flaps out and feet down made for a couple clean kills.

It was cold enough that anything that got wet turned to ice. Ginger was not real fond of getting into the water. Once in, she did just fine, but needed some encouragement to get started. Part of the adjoining backwater was frozen over. It is supposed to stay clod all weekend then warm up above freezing next week. One more weekend for ducks here and then the season closes here at home for me.

could really use cold and windy in South Jersey today Frinkin hot and dead calm was what we are stuck with.

Yep, one of the redleg Canadian northern birds for sho! :)

Beautiful mallard and Canada, Dave. Nice bag on a cold day.

What a mallard!

I grew up in Waterloo, and I always liked the week of thanksgiving for duck hunting. Always plenty of free time that week, and it seemed to me that was usually when the mallards would be moving through around those parts.

Been back and forth between Souix city and Spencer the last couple of days and most of the small water is closed, rivers are floating ice, and have seen very few ducks or geese any of the trips. Need to get back to Kansas to hunt some!

Good morning, Dave~

A nice bag for any day! That Mallard looks like it has all the traits of the "subspecies" we dream of: Big, Fat, Trusting & Slow....

That Canada is not much bigger than the Greenhead - what population do you get there?

All the best,

SJS

Thanks to one and all that responded,

Yes, that was a plump Mallard. I wish I would have weighed it when I got home.

Steve, the Canada goose is a very ordinary Greater Canada, not a Lesser or Cackler variety. It's just that the Mallard was huge!

Even as it was coming into the spread, I thought to myself, "wow". The colors and plumage were picture perfect on this bird. I also failed to take any reference photos. If I were a better painter it might make a difference, however, as it is, the photos would have been wasted on my meager talent. :>)
