Cool link about some neat old decoys...

Mark
I use to have some back in the early 70s and I carnt say I was very impressed with them, most of the time they would only 1/2 inflate, I got so fed up with them I ended up throwing them in the bin. what a load of crap.
Take care and God Bless

Mark, Thanks for the link to the neat documentary!

I used them for walk in beaver bog hunts in the early 80's. A dozen rode in an old gas mask bag. I did cheat and use a snorkel to insure proper air volume. Anyone else ever blow air up their decoys' butts? While they weren't the most realistic looking, I did have a hunter sneak in one quiet am and blast them. Left 3 slowly sinking into the bog. Scared the B-Geez-its out of me. When Cabela's sold them for a short time in the 90's, I picked up another dozen mallards and they're still unopened, awaiting for me to give up on boats and go back to the walk-ins.

That's an awesome old video, Mark!

The voice-overs are priceless !

How 'bout : " To lure the wily bird out of the sky and within range of your gun, you've got to have a decoy so authentic it's got to convince him he just encountered his long-lost cousin enjoying a fine lunch"

I also loved the : "Experts apply a paint job that adds to the realism....." over the shots of the guy with the spayer, cranking out a dozen or so every 15 seconds

"There are also color variations , of course, between hens and drakes .... and for a proper job of decoying, you need both" - Well, that should provide the answer to a question still being debated on forums even today :-)

But my favorite was: " And how are they inflated? Let's watch this hopeful nimrod and see."

So good hunting to all you DHBP "hopeful nimrods" this season!

I love that part too Bob. Nothing like comparing your potential customers to a "nimrod."

Had some of those when my dad and I first started duck hunting. They were easy to carry, but I'm not sure they didn't scare the ducks as they were so poorly colored.

As for "nimrod", that was a term used way back then..'60s and before...to denote a hunter or fisherman. There was no demeaning connotation at all.

Didn't mean to imply it was demeaning. I'm well aware of it's true meaning. 60' and "before" for sure! Nimrod was indeed a fearless hunter in the Book of Genesis, and "nimrod" has been used as a simple synonym for "hunter" in English since the early 1700s.

Do we have Winona Rider to thank for it's new connotation? Or perhaps Elmer Fudd & Daffy.

Just thought the audio content was neat to hear, as it takes one back back to days when there was a different atmosphere and attitude toward waterfowling.

I had a friend who picked up a bunch of those at a garage sale and never used them. They were destroyed in a garage fire and the insurance company replaced them with the modern version. He got them just before our Canada trip two years ago and wanted to hunt them. We ended up hunting them in the marsh several times never had any trouble inflating them we just dropped them flat by holding them by the bill and tail. We shot lots of birds over them. Just goes to show you how simple a hunt can be.

This year in Canada I took two of them with me since he could not go. They hunted one day next to my hand carved rig. That was a silly looking but effective rig.
