Custom Gun Case ideas

I'm working on building a custom gun case in my basement. It will be built into the wall and permanent.

Anybody have any ideas or suggestions for something that they've done or seen that's a neat feature? So far the only thing I've decided on is a string of low-voltage lights along the inside, pegs on the sides for my pistols, and maybe a couple of pegs along the top to show a couple of my nicer guns horizontally.

Any pictures would be great.

Thanks,
Kirk

I have had my house broken into and firearms stolen in the past. Following that & wanting more safety in the house, I gave up on "show cases" for my firearms and have since opted for a 1200 pound gun safe. The guns are not on display but I feel more secure.

Yeah, I know that's an issue, and it's not as secure. I've thought about that.

Our area is still fairly safe though, and for now that's not as big of a concern. I actually thought about the gun safe option for a long time before I decided on this.

You're probably right, but I just can't bring myself to that...yet. I just hope I don't regret it!!

You could always display your firearms with trigger locks on them. It takes away from the look a little but would be safer. Up here all firearms must be rendered inoperable while in storage either with a trigger lock or in an approved gun locker. Last year I bought one of the Stack On metal gun cabinets, it's nice to have them all under lock and key in one central location.

I saw a really nice gun case/collection which was very secure( in my opinion). I'm not one to display my guns openly, because of theives, but this guy had the set up. He built a vault that you walked into and like a walk in closet. The "Vault" was framed with cement walls and a steel door, trimmed out with ceder planks lining the walls. From the outside of the door it just looked like a closet, but when you opened it up the collection of long arms were set vertically, on a felt pad with small recessed lights displaying them. He didn't have handguns but I think two pegs per gun would look fine.

I don't have any photos, sorry.

My buddy's father in law has a 16x24 gun room in his basement..the interior walls were poured at the same time as the basement and he has a vault door on it. I think the ceiling may be pre stressd concrete panels. He has quite a collection of Winchesters and it gives any gun afficianado..a chubby when you walk in. He also has a securuty system that caught some pricks that broke in to his house and tried getting into his gun room. I was looking at safes about 10 years ago and saw one that had 1" bulletproof glass on the front and was covered with wood of your choosing on the sides. If my memory serves me (which will be a surprise) I believe it was about 6500 bucks

Kirk one thing you might consider is humidity control. In McMaster Carr they have Dehumidifiers like the Golden Rod that Cabelas and others sell. The Golden Rod is only 18" but thru McMaster you can buy from 18" to 48" in length. And dont forget a good sum pump with battery back up. A guy that I work with had a gun safe in his basement and about a week ago we had heavy rains and his sewer backed up. Humidity played hell with his gun collection. He is still cleaning his guns and has since installed a 24" dehumidifier in the safe.

A shooting range in the basement too?

I forgot to mention that the price of those dehumidifiers runs between $20 and $35. So they are very reasonable and they only use tenths of an amp so they are easy on the electric bill.

reinforce a room, with rebar and concrete backerboard walls, and get 2000.00 and buy a good door. for the room, i have a safe room, actually a walk in closet. that can sit 5 people, it cost me 4 k .. but if they break in they can't get me or family... guns too....
