December "What's on your Workbench?"

Due to an excess of houshold woodworking projects, I have had little time to work on decoys, and the little time I've had there has been too much dust in the garage to finish painting the 2 BBWD and Ruddy that have been waiting for me WAY TOO long.

Besides the 4 swans I have started, I cut out 6 Brant the other night:

Chuck, I don't know if you noticed, but one of you bottom boards doesn't have a knot in it.

I did, and was thinking of burning that one and cutting out another with more charactor

Great work guys. Sean I'm borrowed a pair of crowell blue winged teal and am in the process of doing my first reproducion, complete with patina and would like to know where the learning curve is. Do you have any suggestions on reading material. I'll post photos of work tomorrow, december has been busy.

Always a thank you to John for this thread. And a thank you to all who post their work. Here's the bench from december Actually moved the "bench" to my office. I actually completed 6 blue winged, 6 ring necked, 6 woodies, 2 blacks, 2 mallards and 2 greenwinged and 2 bufflehead. Didn't have much time to post with all that carving and sntas workshop in action for our 5,3, and 1 year old children.

Anyway here are the drakes in progress and hens in the back.

Now that I've posted I don't feel like so much of a lurker.

Happy new Year to all. In January I'll start building a simmons sea skiff. Maybe I'll post progress.

Frank. I really don't know where I could steer you. Only that you have to make a lot of birds before it starts to click. I would concentrate on form at first rather paint.

Last day of December, good time to post! I started this decoy on Christmas night from a cutout set from Willy at The Duck Blind. Last year on my trip to Tilghman Island MD I managed to take my first Canvasback, so I decided to carve a Can decoy to hunt over on this years trip. Well one thing lead to another and I forgot about it until the trip got close. Its HD tan cork, basswood head, glass eyes, all from The Duck Blind. The keel is left over Mahogany from when I built my Devlin Cackler. I used stainless steel eyelets as a dual purpose of attaching decoy cord and allowing cord to be wrapped around the keel. I would rather have cut out a nicer shaped keel, but I don't own a jig saw or band saw, and it being Christmas break I couldn't use the one in the wood shop classroom where I work. I think I'm going to switch from Stainless to Brass eyelets, I just think they will look nicer!

I nicknamed this decoy "Lucky", its the seventh decoy I have carved, and the first attempt at a Canvasback. I hoped that it would bring the divers to us despite the funny weather we've been having this year. It didn't quite work, we only managed a Buffie apiece, although it would have been 2 or 3 for each of us but those darn things are either really fast, or wear flak vests.
