duck calls

Paul,
Thank you for the kind words about the call. I made this call to repay Pauls kindness for sending me some wood.

John,
Dave Larsen and Jim Chamberlin, both members of this site, are also custom call makers. They both helped me a lot back when I was figuring this stuff out (I still have not figured it out) Dave actually got me started when my daughter won one of his call give aways a few years ago. I am sure you would be happy with a call from any of these guys.

I have an Echo and a Pure Duck call that I use and a box of old calss I don't anymore. Both are good calls. The Echo was about $25 and the Pure Duck about $100 more. When I reach for a duck call, the Pure Duck is the call I go for first.

With that said, any call that sounds remotely like a duck will work, just like anyone who can call relatively well will attract ducks no matter what the call. Listen to people talk, dogs bark, cats meow, cows moo and pigs squel. Do any two of the same species sound exactly alike - nope. Same with ducks - they all sound different. To say that one call is better than any other, cheap verses expensive I don't think matters. Knowing how to use the thing is what counts. Get a good calling CD like the one Pure duck sells and learn from it.

My opinion.

Right on Mike !

But it's hard to convince some darn know it all that has spent 200 bucks on a pretty piece of cocobolla that his calling is having the reverse effect for an entire marsh. If you want a real treat go to North Carolina's Pamlico Point on opening day. Everyone there is convinced that he or she is a duck virtuoso. With that kind of calling and the typical all Mallard decoy set, it's a wonder that anyone get's a decent shot (Didn't mention the skybusting that seems to go along with being a neophyte.)

Sometimes I wish you had to pass a test to even buy a duckcall. I frequently put the call away when there is a lot of calling in a limited space.

Best,
Harry

I read once that the best conservation tool is a duck call in the wrong hands....

Thanks a bunch guys.. For all the input. Here's one for you guys... I make bowsanders... I sell them for 15 bucks and 20 bucks large and small size. Would any of you that carve and could use a sander be intertested in trading a calling cd or tape for a sander. I can't find my old one I had many years ago. Time to start practising again while driving to work. Let me know I'm making a batch of sanders right now.

Thanks again, Ed

I have one of Ed's bow sanders and it has seen plenty of use over the years. Good design, craftsmanship, and no end to the cornersand high spots it can ease. Ed, got any pics to show?

Man, aint that the truth! I'm no expert caller, but I do practice and I'm able to call ducks into gun range. I have a buddy who blows a duck call like a party horn. Cuttin a fart would sound better!

Find a call that you like, one that sounds good to you, and one that you can make ducky sounds with. Stick with it and practice. The Primos Wench is a good call to start with. Cheap, and it sounds great. I have a Sean Mann short reed and it is good on geese.

For a calling CD or DVD get the Carlson Calling System. It first teaches you how to control a duck call. Much different than other cds that just say make it sound like this. Get the one with the Equalizer call too, a lot of cheap calls can't make the required tones to work with the system.

Andy,

I had a cassett tape(I know I'm aging myself a bit by saying that) that was made by Wendell Carlson. And that tape did exactly the same thing you just stated. Controling the call. I probably learned more about blowing a duck call and calling ducks from that tape than anything/anyone else. Also made me come to grips with the fact that NOT ALL DUCKS ARE CALLABLE! High flyers heading for another state, refuge birds and birds that have just been shot at etc. I feel that I sound pretty good on a duck call, not near as good as others but better than others and I owe much of that to that tape.

Nate,

You make a very good point: find a call YOU like and stick with it. There probably isn't a duck hunter alive that hasn't owned more than his fair share of calls.

For the record. I have two main calls. A hand turned call by Kelley Gadus from Ohio. I've probably had it going on ten years and it has been a great call. Very ducky and sounds great top to bottom. And back when I bought it I think I paid $40. The other call I use is a RNT Daisy Cutter. Again another great call. A bit more raspy than the Gadus call and I like it for more close in stuff.

My vote for cheap call is ILLUSION. I'm not sure their even making them anymore. Very ducky, raspy, nasily little double reed. For sure a close in call.

My 2 cents........
