Easter Candy...

Here's a few pictures of another frond decoy as it progressed through the stages from frond to mallard drake sleeper:

Nice work as usual Bob!

As far as ending up in an easter basket, Remember that I live about and hour closer to you than Robinson. Drop it of at my house and I PROMISE I'll get it to him!

Bob,

This affliction you have with carving decoys from Fronds is really needing some professional intervention. Just so nothing bad happens to your frond decoys during this intervention, I am reluctantly volunteering to be sole custodian of all Frond decoys carved by you until the authorities can release you back into the carving world. I will take them on outings to test their effectiveness of course and will try and make sure no one hunting with me put any shot into them should there be a cripple in the spread.

All nonsense aside, You sir are a master of the art

;-)

yet another disgusting bird out of bob! Very cool.... It still blows my mind that you take the fronds and make those! Beautiful as usual.

You are very skilled at painting and if I may ask; do you actually use this decoy? If so, have you considered the UV paint that a few companies are marketing these days. I'm curious to know from
a professional point of view.

Absolutely Mac,

And I have found that they make a great gunning bird. I have a bunch of blacks & mallards done and want to continue to add mallards for next season.

I do recall a discussion about "UV" paint on another forum. Didn't think much of the claims or see any advantage to using it. Very happy with the line of paints & mediums I'm currently using, and that's a big part of being able to paint well: a system that has a great technical data book which helps you understand how all the paints and mediums in the system can work to your advantage. Getting it all to do what you want to do and having a high degree of durability is big for anyone making his own birds.

Well this begs another question; Do you use these fine decoys with any of the mojos or any other various hokey pokey gimmicks? That would almost be a sin! lol. Where I hunt we can only use
jerk strings anyway. . .

I think you answered your own question.

I do carry a jerk string rig.

Lots of mallards down in the flooded fields off the River today. Had to get that new frond mallard wet so I went and floated some decoys and "shot" some birds. I do believe that frond will deceive 'em next season.

Bob,

You wouldn't happen to have a side view pattern and a overhead for your sleeper heads that you would give to anyone do you ? I'm working on a couple of rig of blacks right now that a good sleeper head pattern would come in handy for.

Well, Mike,

So far it's been a case of " I get by with a little help from my friends." I've had the good fortune to have been sent some fronds to get hooked on, but now I'm starting to put out some inquiries in the areas where the type of palms I need grow.

If any of you Floridians or Southern California dwellers come across any nice specimens, I'll pay shipping.

Of course, if all else fails, there is always the "frond shaped" cork gunning bird to fall back on:

No secret there: just take your regular blackduck head pattern, cut it down, lop off the end of the bill, & turn it around. Easy, peasy....
