Finished up my widgeon, hollow cedar painted in acrylics, first time using all hand tools. Thanks to Sean Sutton for the help on recommending the must have tools.

Finally getting some chances to work on a few decoys for next season. I want to carve a few Shovelors and Gadwall....here is my first Shovelor, still a little work needed on it. I have to redo my bill pattern because it didn't come out quite right to me....looks more like a regular duck bill than a Shovelor..

Working on a new teal head pattern. Sort of based it off of an old wildfowler. And new BIG a** bench vise!

Kevin Puls,

Nice job on the head blank, but IMHO, it looks like you didn't take grain direction into account when you laid out the head pattern on your stock. For durability, the grain should run the length of the bill as best as possible. Look at Tom Barb's teal on page 4 of this thread to see what I'm talking about. From your picture, it would appear that your grain runs 90 degrees to the bill length. You may find yourself with a broken bill at some point on this decoy. You can reinforce the bill with a piece of 1/8th or 3/16th dowel glued in along the bill length. Looks great though. Looking forward to seeing your progress in the March edition. Jim

Well at least its a bird. :)
11x14 oil painting of Catalonian Tumblers (Colom Vol Catala). Now it just has to dry so I can trade it to a nice guy for a pair of his pigeons.

Tom,
I agree that is a very cool pin.

I have looked through the thread several times now. This place has so much talent. Thank you to everyone that has taken time to post up what they are working on. Right now I am working to much to carve and paint and I hate it. I can't wait to get back in the shop.

Two more to go in this headstyle and two slightly different alert head birds and I am "off" redheads for awhile to focus on scaup...

My bad camera angle on this photo accentuates the cheek size disproportionately as well as altering the eye and eyelid...

Great looking birds - really got the look of the species.

Of course, with Broadbill next on your agenda, I await anxiously.....

All the best,

SJS
