was sitting out on my deck overlooking the toms river here in new jersey tonight and for the first time this summer
i had 5 flocks of geese fly over low and land close by biggest flock had 16 and the less had 6
im hope to get out after some geese in the next few weeks as i v never been before going to try a few wma
and landtrusts that have water
????????????? is do most guys hunt for them in the am or pm over water
thanks for any info

It really depends. I have some spots that later in the season they come back mid morning and others where they come back to water well after dark.
Odds are their patter changes soon after the season starts.

i hear that but i do not have any fields/crops to hunt only water body areas and very small grass areas around water

the local geese in my area (sewell...southwest of you) will feed in the cornfield early am for a few hours. im pretty certain they go to water during the day, and then they return to feed a few hours before dark, and then after dark i hear them leave. the only times i have ever seen them stay in the field all day was during rain. ive farmed and hunted this field for years and its like clockwork. early season here they are usually small flocks of around 8 unless a few groups arrive at once. theres a lot of 20lb plus locals around here! good luck!

Ah yes, the elusive mutant 20+lb Canada wearing size 14 EE tennis shoes - must be flying over the cooling stacks of the local nuclear power plant.

Nuclear power plants in jersey???? No not here!!! Lol

John, it has been my experience in hunting early geese that after feeding in the fields in the early morning they will return to water. Watch the flocks and scout the areas you plan to hunt in order to pattern them, they will fly to and from the fields almost on a schedule. If they are not landing in the water you have access to but fly over you may be able to convince them to come by for a visit.

Also, as a general rule early season geese are likely to return to water after shooting hours. Scouting your areas will determine exactly what time the return flight is. Be cautious though, gunning a roost for resident geese will likely result in them changing patterns as they relocate to a safer place.

Hope this helps some.....

you have to use bigfoot decoys with the shoes on for your best chance at them :)
but really the local geese here in jersey are a different subspecies of canadians and the old males are huge. when the migrating lessers come in during the winter they look like ducks compared to them. i never hunted local geese anywhere else so i dont know how they compare
