Good little "Hider"

Bob,
How well did she work?
Al

Al,

Sadie weighs about 65 lbs and was the "runt " of her litter. She gets geese like a"towboat pushing a barge" over water and has no problem, but a big goose is a real mouthful for her on land. Nevertheless, she always manages to get hold of them and bring them to hand.

Some times when she gets to a downed goose in the stubble, I get the look that says: "We're in trouble now, boss, cause I think you shot down a damn aeroplane!" Note the bulging neck muscles in pic #2:

While she was bringing in goose #2 and I was busy snapping pics, we got buzzed by about 80 mallards. I started yelling, "Leave it; kennel. KENNEL!" as I jammed more shells in my gun and scrambled to cover up. Sure enough, she dropped the second goose at my blind and dove back in hers as the mallards kept coming. I was watching part of the flock when others started to land not 30 feet from our blinds. She stayed put (...always a pleasure to shoot over a steady animal!). After that, it was just a matter of reminding myself that when I popped up to shoot, I'd better let the birds get far enough to let the pattern open up - as I was shooting 2 3/4" BB, goose loads.

When you hit a mallard with a load of BB's, it comes down like a rock. Looks like Sadie was so happy to be picking up smaller birds that she took to the air whille retrieving them. "I can fly! I can fly!"

She got a lot of "Good Girls" yesterday

I need to give an endorsement to the 'house-brand' snow covers for ground blinds I got from Rogers in MO this season. They are beautifully made of heavy duty material ( you can pick the style that fits your brand of layout), and considering that we were not in much cover at all I was amazed at how well it blended when I stowed the truck and viewed it walking back across the field.

--The snow cover for Sadies blind was made from an old dust collection bag from a two-stage collector with some "grassing" straps added. Another foray into using my wife's sewing machine ;-) It vanished as well.

Looking good! Great pictures of the pup. Glad someone is getting some action. Making me jealus.

Great pictures bob,
i once had a lab that would tuck in tight to me ,prone out and lay his head down when the birds were working. Marvelous creatures.
Bill.

Bob,

I was happy for you when I saw the single picture in your first post. NOW you went and made me jealous. :>) :>) looks like fun times for all.

Personally, I think a 65lb. dog is the perfect size. Small enough to fit well in a sneakboat, yet big enough to get the job done.

Dave,

Agreed!

Only thing I would add is that, after training Sadie, I've decided I'll never own another male..... not putting up with all the "studdy" behavior has been a treat.

And although this was taken a few years back, my daughters would agree

,,,,,,,,,with all the "studdy" behavior ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Like a dog I know of, when he was a pup, taking off in search of the source of a smell carried in on the evening breeze when 100 miles from home in a strange new place. Not to be found after 3 hours of searching. Then coming back sometime during the night and jumping into the open pick up bed.

Ya, I would have been just fine not living thru that experience.

Bob-

I love the picture of Sadie in that second picture....that's a great one....looks like you're still having good times on those geese.

Good Gurl Sadie, heres a treat,, Bob loved the story and pics ,my daughter to loves laying on Dasiy while she reads her stories.....

I awoke to go to work this am at 0530 and found miss daisy laying spread eagle on the living room coach enjoying the heat of the fireplace stove ...

i got a whole lot of tail wagging and goodmorning dad kisses when she come too and saw me smiling at her... i too had heard of the boy dog anttics and had decided on a she dog for those reasons as well and will have another for sure when the time comes...

what brand is your hut for the pup?? daisy is a 90 lb dawg by the way and trying to find one that isnt an arm and leg is hard to find..

a funny story i bought a layout for me and it had a dog door in the bottom but it would have to be a 20lb poodle to fit in there....lol
daisy would take up most of my layout blind...may have to buy another layout for her lol

Great pictures of sadie, Its always a pleasure to see a nice well trained Lab, and I know sadie is well trained. When it comes to gundog training we both think and train on the same lines, and like me, you prefer a bitch to a dog, I always tend to think that dogs have got cloth beteen their ears when it comes to training but a bitch will learn a lot quicker and are more devoted to you and wont rome like a dog does. Thanks for posting the pictures mate.
Take care and God Bless
