Good weekend on the Texas coast

I got to get away for the weekend to hunt our opener down outside of Corpus Christi. As of this year I have hunted the same point on the season opener for 8 years. It has always produced at least a few birds for me. This year was one of the best. Me and Earl were set up about one hour before legal time. We enjoyed the show of plenty of birds in and out of the decoys. My first bird of the season was a great mature bluebill. I picked my shots carefully after that and only shot one bird from each group that decoyed. It was one of those perfect mornings. Later in the day my friend called me and told me one of the big red stags on his ranch had died unexpectedly. He invited me out to pick up the head so I can do a euro mount for him. I dropped off my boat at the hotel and headed out. Spent the afternoon drinking a few cold beers and watching a storm roll in from the coast. It was a great way to end a wonderfull day. I ended up sleeping in the next morning due to heavy rain so I only managed to get in one hunt for the weekend. Oh well, with small kids and a wife at home, sleeping in NEVER happens for me so I took full advantage of a quiet hotel room and slept till 9. The latest I've slept in about 5 years. Now I have big plans for this stag, Going to do a European black forest style carved plaque for the skull to give it the regal euro look. Time to go put on a resperator and skin it out.......yuck

John - Good to see the ruddy decoy got out. I shot a ruddy both weekends of season so far. We have about 200-300 trading back and forth on Clear Lake. Every now and then, one gets too close...

European mounts are cool. That will be a great addition in your trophy room, John. Make sure you post some pictures when it is done.
Sure looks like you had a great outing for ducks. Next time put those hens up front so I can get a better look at them. Insert smiley face! I'll bet this will be a banner duck year for you down there.
