Guess that's why they call it a "duck boat!"

Same here. Mickey is 55lbs and most people assume he's a poodle. Though every once in a while I run into someone who says something like, "My grandpa used to have a dog like that."

Rick

People say that to you because you live in WI. Here they think he is some sort fo misbegotten poodle. Gus used to love to fight- he would pick out the biggest chessie at the ramp and go after him...

Mickey's that way too. He loves to play with little dogs, but he starts fights with the big ones. And as he gets older it's getting worse.

The other thing he does is to pay real close attention to what we're talking about. One day my wife mentioned that he smelled bad and I should give him a bath. I looked all over the house for him--finally found him standing in the tub.

For a long time we've been spelling out certain words when we don't want to get him all worked up, like "w-a-l-k" and "h-u-n-t" and "d-u-c-k." But now he's figured out that whenever we spell a word it must be something good, so he jumps up and runs to the door.

Great photo and it is amazing how well our dogs train us, especially once they have done just enough to satisfy 'our training program'. Then it becomes their turn and boy can they manipulate us. :>) :>)

How did you put the hole in the boat?

My grandpa always used to say, "If you're going to train a dog, you've got to be smarter than the dog." I thought he was joking!

My swamp collie was nowhere near as smart as the AWS- you could have a conversation with him. By the end of the season, all the hair on the bottom of his tail would be gone from wagging over the awlgrip in the boat or gravel in the rock blind. He would go up to my neighbors and steal chickens ( 2/3 of a mile away) and retrieve the chicken home, then kill the chicken and eat it. He was a character...

Rick, What a funny post about the AWS. Everytime I tell my wife I am going to clean Rivers ears, I have to speel it so River doesn't run and hide. By the way, River is 72lbs. quite large for an AWS. She is definately overweight as she eats half my lunch in the blind every hunt.

When I tell Mickey it's time to clean his ears, he goes and stands in the middle of the kitchen floor and trembles. It's like he's going to an execution.

Funny about the lunch. Mickey eats half of mine too, but I don't mind. I eat half of his dog treats. They're better than the sandwiches I make. :)

Rick,
You might have stumbled on to something. Obviously a duck felt very secure by sleeping on the bow. Maybe when you set up you should put a pair of sleepers up on the bow. Passing ducks might find this as the best sign of a "sanctuary" in the marsh. Great pic.
