Five ducks ended their migration today. :>)

Part of the bay I was in was frozen over with a thin sheet of ice. As the morning wore on the wind and temps melted some of it away. Gun deer opened today so I was alone on the water, except for the ducks.

Dave~

Congratulations on a beautiful bunch o' birds!

....shame, though, that the hen populations seem to be down.....

All the best,

SJS

Even looks like you hit one of them.

Nice day, those days have been in short supply here this year.

Well, at least you got one real duck in the mix. What are those green-headed things anyway??? :)

It's funny you say that. It's been over ten years since I shot a green head. People look at me funny when I say that but it's true.

Probably longer for me, I think 1999 or 2000 was the last time I killed one and that was hunting in Michigan at Harsen's Island with some guys I met through this site.

Dave,
Great morning, great pic.

Two points:
1) Nice touch: "the end of the migration for these five." Too funny... nice connection to the other thread.

2) What's the story on your one bluebill? It stands out among your gorgeous mallards.

From where I now sit, that certainly would be a good morning. Very good indeed.

Nicely posed picture. I appreciate the "lack" of blood and the general respect given to the birds in the photo.

Way to go, Dave. I do recognize those four in the background but have never seen a hybrid like that one up front. You had to love that hunt.

Tod,

If you look closer you can see that I hit at least two of them. Possibly the others just played dead, for the privilege of meeting me. This type of day has been scarce here as well.

Nice result! Hopefully you didn't have to dodge too many deer slugs.

Andrew,

A couple of groups did in fact hunt the adjacent area. I was set up next to a very small island about 100 yards from dry land. Two guys right near the shoreline, let loose with 7 quick rounds in secession. I'm not sure they hit anything! (one of the reasons I don't group hunt deer, when I do hunt deer)

Larry

The Bluebill came in with the first group of Mallards. He recklessly dropped into the decoys while the rest of the group just made a swing thru to check things out. The group made two more passes in range before moving on. I kept holding back thinking they were going to fully commit, oh well,,,,,,,,,, yet another opportunity slips thru my fingers.

The Bluebill swam around a while before getting nervous. I took him as he decided to leave. (Figured Carl shouldn't get all the "real" ducks.)
