Here's my Lulu

View attachment Lulu 7Wks. First Day Home 06_18_2018.JPGSo here I am retired, mid something or other in age, and 2 years ago I put down my chocolate non hunting lab and amid much discussion I convinced the wife we didn't need to bring a new dog in our lives at this juncture of time. Reluctantly, she agreed and we went on our merry way together on new different interest. We'd travel to antique shows that required a day or two of overnight, all day trips to in state points of interest without calling ahead to see if dogs were allowed or having to return in time to "let the dog out" or getting home in time to "feed the dog". However, I must admit that it was a very handy excuse ( subterfuge?), that on more then one occasion we employed to vacate a boring gathering. No more yard clean up, trips to the vet, no more 40lb. bag of food to carry in, securing the yard waste so the bag wouldn't get ripped open and the cuttings spread all over before I could put it out for pick up, working on my boats, truck and car were so much better now that my tools, rags and parts could be left within easy reach and not have to worry about a playful thief hiding them or taking off with them. No need to cease operations and open the hazmat container to IMMEDIATELY clean up any size spill of oil, antifreeze, paint etc. not only for the protection of life and limb of the dogs but also mine if he tracked any of that aforementioned stuff into the house, although after stepping on some really ripe black walnuts I thought the design of dog prints were quite interesting on the kitchen floor, dining room hard floor but by the time they got onto the rug in the den they were a faded. Luckily "WE" got a pass that one time because someone cuddled up to Momma while I hung my head in shame and promised to get it cleaned up before the weekend company, yeah he got a bunch of extra treats from me that night!

Yeah life is good, relaxing, easy and no pressure!!!

All that being said, I'd like to introduce our new addition Lulu. Picked her up from the breeder one week ago today when she was exactly 49 days old. So far Lulu is living up to her name that is why this post has been delayed. Without knowing it she is keeping us busy with a 7 hour ride t(one way) to the breeder for pick up, a vet appointment, house training, playtime, chew time, lots of "NO!" time, belly rubs, kisses and even a little obedience training. The little bugger is smart as whip. knew her name by the second day and responded quickly by the third day. She learned sit by the third day and is doing very well with that. the come command is a little week but she is coming along and I don't for see it being a major hurdle. My fear is, as I said before she is smart as whip, which probably makes her smarter then me!
In any event I haven't had a hunting dog since the days when I had a full head of hair and they were beagles so I looking forward to taking Lulu out in the field and marsh with me, hopefully I will be able to get her out this yearfor some lite hunting depending on how her training goes since she will be 6 1/2 months by mid November.

PS Momma is a very happy camper and we all know how the saying goes, but in case you don't or need a reminder " A HAPPY WIFE IS A HAPPY LIFE"

Great looking pup! I have too many different irons in the fire to commit to training one at the moment, or I would be looking at picking one up myself!

What a little cutie!!!!!!!! Looking forward to seeing her progress into a full fledged hunting dog

Good on you, Joe. They're lots of effort, but will bring you plenty of joy as well.

Although we had our moments of wondering, " What have we gotten ourselves into !?" after we decided on yet another Lab pup after our old 'un had to be put down 2 years ago, we have adjusted. Fortunately, she travels well, tolerates all the abuse the grand-kids can hand out, and keeps me more active than I might be without a hunting buddy who needs to get out and run off steam every day.

We have, however, spoiled this one, and there are now throw-covers on every couch in the house [sly]

Here, my wife had the gall to take a nap on "Scooter's couch," so Scooter was forced to settle for the next best spot.

I would suggest finding a local hunting retreiver club and learning from them.
It was a great help to my son when he got his Chesapeake Bay Retriever.
A big thing is the ability to introduce the pup to birds used in training.

Thanks for the compliments and well wishes everyone.

Dani - Thanks, me too! I'm really extied about training and watching Lulu grow in the dog I know she can be.

Braden - You'll know when the time is right and then you'll have the time of your life

MLBob Furia - Thanks for the words of encouragement. I can understand the couch privileges I find it very easy to be easy with this pup ( it must be the age, in my case anyway [;)] ). I let this pup get away with things I would never even think of letting my other dogs do..
PS love the picture

Roy - Thanks. The has already begun for instance approximately 10:30pm - 1:00am - 4:00am repeat nightly ( early early morning if you prefer ha ha )

Fritz Meck- ABSOLUTELY !!!

John Ki - I already know some nice people in the local retriever club and plan on joining.
