Hevi shot ammo Changed?

Lee,shooting clubs have been having their shot reclaimed for at least 30 years.I don't know how many otfits there are around the country, but it isn't done on a regular basis, and depends on the amount of shooting and the field,to make it worthwhile.I heard that after the Remington Gun Club at Lordminister was closed the lead offshore was reclaimed.Don't know how they did that job.The land machines operate like a beach sweeper.

Hope you can read the scanned imaged of the boxes....

I scanned the two boxes, the remington says "heavier than lead"

The Environ-metal says "heavier than steel"

I guess I won't know how they work untill next season.

BTW-- the lead poisoning issue is true, I'd be an advocate for all bird shot being non-toxic. I don't understand (in NY) how they say non-toxic shot for waterfowl, but it's ok to hunt upland birds, on a wetland, with lead. Just doesn't make sense

Both those statements "Heavier than Lead" and "Heavier than Steel" are trademarks of those companies, at least that's how I read those statements on the boxes. Which means absolutely nothing and says nothing conclusive about what's inside - It's MARKETING folks.

Shoot'em and ask the ducks which one killed them deader!

The one that is "heavier than steel" is lighter than lead. I believe it is slightly heavier than "hevi steel" and Bismuth. It's a "tweener". The original was like 13 compared to lead at about 12 and now there is one out there that is about 18. I think #12 shot in that stuff will kill geese at 80 yards ;). It probably would sound like a Warthog shooting its gatling gun coming at you. Pretty soon only one hunter will be able to hunt a lake so no one gets tenderized on the other side.

You might be right, two companies, two trademarks.

Next year I'll ask the ducks "which one did you in? If I'm lucky they'll be speechless.

I spent my youth swallowing lead pellets in a large varity of animals, clamping lead sinkers with my teeth and breathing leaded gas fumes.
Heck, it never did me no ......

Huh, Forgot what my point was, Nevermind.

You can buy tungston frome manufacture by the lb. min don't have to buy the 7lb jar at $158.00

I've always thought it was ironic that on one local WMA steel is required during waterfowl season, but drain the field day after season ends, and next weekend lead is allowed for snipe hunting.

Jim,didn't realize that Snipe season extended beyond the close of duck season, and that lead could be used. Are they not classed as waterfowl?BTW checked out your upgraded site.Terrific.Nice calls.Would like to see some of your tales Snipe hunting.Pictures too.

Lee,
Not to split hairs, but.. not sure where you saw those numbers. Might want to double check them.

Lead is closer to 11 g/cc, in reference to shot many call it 10.9, some say it's as high as 11.3. Also, the original Hevishot was 12.0, and the newer stuff that I've seen - Hevi 13 - is about 13 g/cc.

If anyone is interested, I believe the Hevisteel is 9.5 g/cc and the 'Hevishot duck' (and classic doubles) shot is about 9.9 or less, thus 'heavier than steel', (Steel is 7.8) but not 'heavier than lead' as the original was. The 'Hevishot goose' loads are still the original 12.0 g/cc density shot (supposedly at least).

Anyway, seems pretty misleading to call them all the Hevishot when they are actually different, with vastly different densities. If nothing else it is confusing to be sure. Which is why I don't buy it.

Dan, the lead depends the hardness of the mix (how much tin and antimony). I think yo are correct about misleading advertising.

Joe, The season went till Feb. 8. They are considered migratory birds, but I quess not waterfowl? All I know is that DNR does not require steel.

Thanks Jim.Guess they are in the same category as doves and crows.Nice.Suppose it wouldn't matter if they were shot over water,as well.
