Hipsters are going hunting

I was interviewed a few months ago by a journalist who wanted to talk to folks who had gotten into hunting a bit later in life. My friends are going to have a field day with the title, but a nice write up all in all. I probably should have brought up eating a duck with rice breast, just to makes things a bit more interesting:).

Definetly a two way street. It's great and all but do we really want people involved in hunting who are affraid to admit it? It's a sad state of affairs when admitting you are a hunter might keep you from getting a job or hurt some ones business. Hipsters are the worst

rednecks would have not taken two days to butcher out a deer and get it stuffed into casings. Luckily I am in a part of the country where hunting is not looked upon as a crime.

Kris,
Don't worry to much about your buddies. It was a good article and if the hipsters want to get involved more power to them. Hopefully they get deeply involved in the hunting culture over time, learn about the traditions and learn about and embrace conservation. Many are so quick to criticize, myself included the "city folk that don't have a clue about hunting". Glad to see some learning.

Ironic, but not surprising, that hipsters are discovering what rednecks have known along."

Would you say rednecks were hunting before it was cool?

Tom my dad didn't hunt but i went with my uncle he is big into deer hunting. I remember get off the bus at his house (he was a firefighter and was home more than my parents) and help him cut up deer. He does bow, rifle, shot gun,Muzzle loader, private land, state land, and has crop damage. I have probably skinned and cleaned a few hundred deer. Skinning/quatering takes about an hour. Boning takes 3-4 depending on size.

I would rather cut up someones deer and bs than go deer hunting.

I grew up around bows more than guns but did a lot of squirrel blasting as a kid. The big thing you learn as a kid is to respect firearms and the unwritten rules passed down. We taught ourselves to duck hunt and have really enjoyed the learning experience though.

One time i brought the entire intestinal tract of a deer into a high school biology class. 1/2 the kids were freaked out the other half were enjoying it. Then i cut the heart off and blood went all over the teachers desk, if you could have seen her face, haha.

Hipsters discovering that hunting is a great way to spend your time and yeilds some tasty eats, as rednecks have always known. Nothing about being cool.

Todd, I was referring to hipsters overwhelming obsession with new trends. To them it is almost a competition to see who is the most up to date in everything, fashion, books, movies, restaurants, etc. They are constantly trying to be the first one to do something. So much so that it has spawned a hole new genre of jokes.... why did the hipster burn his mouth..... because he ate dinner before it was cool.

So I was making a joke about rednecks being hipsters because they hunted before it was cool.

I thought hipsters were too cool to follow trends - I know so little. :).

That is what they want you to think.

As long as we are talking hipsters and I'm obviously ignorant... When they are deer hunting do they have problems with that long chain that their wallets are on dragging across their tree stand or snagging on brush when still hunting?

No, but they get special chains dipped in camo plier dip to keep the jangling to a minimum.

I didn't think hipsters did anything useful like dipping stuff in plier dip - see how little I know.

OOPS, my bad, I reread and you said "get", not make themselves.

The artificial was interesting to me. My son's and daughter are adults now, young adults I will add, but nevertheless adults. Both my son's are early 20's and my daughter is 18. I tried to get my daughter involved, but the only thing she really took to, occasionally was fly fishing. My boy's on the other hand, love to hunt and have the bug! At lest I got two of them into it and a very good friend who is younger than I am. I understand the dressing of the deer commit and agree with it, but... . I have never shot any large game animal as much as I have wanted to learn. So, if I was dressing a deer maybe it would take me that long too, I would hope not, but I wouldn't know what I was doing either. Unlike duck hunting which I had no trouble picking up on my own and just became better at it as the years went by (and I can always learn more), I don't know if I personally could pick up dear or elk hunting as easily but I'm only speaking for myself. I believe once I've doe it a time or two with someone showing me the correct way I would have no trouble. I guess as long as they're doing everything right then I'll give them a thumbs up for putting in the time and effort. Maybe it will become a part of there lives, you have to start some place and as I have learned, if you can't afford to pay someone to show you and people you know who hunt won't, then you do what you have to do.

I didn't realize anyone outside motorcycle movies wore their wallets on chains...see how little I know!

Hey. Hey.....be careful. Don't want to piss off any Harley riders with the chained wallet remark. I guess I'm a bit ignorant too. Here I thought a hipster wore a black beret, black turtle neck shirt, black slacks and pointy black shoes saying stuff like "Groovy Man"
