Putting on a little scout, found a brewers up front and a band in the back. If you could only kill 1, which you picking? Sorry for poor quality pic, it was taken from a distance with my phone through binos. It’s a pretty good brewers.

Well seeing as Louisiana says I can only kill 4 mallards a day. I would bear down on the 4 that's packed together the tightest and be happy I have 4 ducks to eat.

Half breeds eat just as good as pure bloods and bands don't mean much to me.

Not in my house. They go in the pot.

I have three mounted birds. The first speak I called in and killed by myself.

My first pintail drake I killed on public water.

And a redhead drake that came in as a pair of drakes. Dad killed the lead bird and I killed the trail bird.

If it hadn't been for memorable moments of those birds, they would have gotten ate as well.

We cajuns are a practical people 😎

it is cheaper to eat them, that’s for sure!

I was very much like you for a very very long time. I dont even like having to worry about dust on mounts. But I started separating photos by season, about 10-12 years ago, and then I have all the season end photos printed and make an album. I have quite a library now of my photos in the office. We are such a technology driven people now, its kind of cool to have something I can physically touch and pick up. Plus it took one loss of an electronic, with lots of photos, and I decided then I was making albums. Its amazing what I remember about weather and storms and environmental changes in those photos and can compare to present day conditions sometimes. But looking back, there are quite a few birds I regret eating, and after enough of that shit, I started going ahead and getting some mounted. Not saying you should change, but it is kind of cool to see birds in peoples homes that their father shot and they still look to be in good condition. But just like anything else, I cant take a decoy with me, I cant take a duck call with me, and I certainly cant take a mount with me, so I do understand the cajun way.

I don't even have pictures of anything.

They are all in my mind.

It's strange I can close my eyes and remember the sting of cold air or the feel on my skin of rain running down my back from leaky rain gear or the smell of fresh marsh mud churned up after setting decoys from the first winter I could drive my own truck and go chance public land birds in the wma's and nwr's of swla.

But I can hardly remember what I ate for dinner yesterday 😂😂😂😂

Anyways that's enough of me getting your thread off track

Well, been duck hunting 48 years and never heard of a brewer, maybe we don't have whatever they are out east. Bu clue me in.

Gadwall x Mallard hybrid. Pretty rare for me here as well. Always have my eyes peeled though. I feel like I target odd balls more than leg bands. Always been a passion to find the weirdos. From no bar mallard to pintail x mallard to snow x canada crosses. I REALLY want a blue phase ross one day as well. Them are my dream birds for the wall.

How about a banded Brewer’s??
I mean I would probably shoot that on the white house front lawn. Ive spent a lot of time behind glass looking at birds and have found lots of unique odd ball birds. But never have seen a banded hybrid anything. There was a photo sent to me a year or two ago of biologist who had banded a pin x mall hybrid. Someone in the country got a gem im sure. Unless its still out there?

Thanks William-I'm now clued in! Seeing as we get both of those ducks out east, that would be a possibility, but the only hybrid ducks we ever shoot are black/mallard, of which one was shot today.

I would take the brewers over the mallard band. But in the northeast I only know of one pintail/mallard my buddy Timmy shot. Every other hybrid I’ve shot or is shot is a mallard/black duck. If it’s a band or a mallard/black, I’m taking the band every time!

I used to joke with my boys when I got a bird back from the dog, "I must have shot that band off again'. Caleb has shot a couple bands, one on a wood duck, one on a wigeon, a few shot by guys I was hunting with, both were mallards and I passed on them to shoot the wigeons streaking in underneath them. I started duck hunting in 1967 and have never shot a banded anything, but have shot a couple of crosses, a euro/american wigeon cross, a brewers and a barrows/common GE. To answer your question William, I'd just like to go duck hunting again, I'd even shoot a mallard.

We get Mexican mallard hybrids and I’ve shot quite a few, they’re nothing special. So I understand what you mean. I’ll take a band over that cross any day.

A wigeon band would be damn cool. I’ve killed so many wigeon, but never seen a banded one. It really is wild to me to hear stories like this. And it’s crazy because you hear stories of guys who shoot 2-3 a hunt and do it often. Then there are hunters like you who would do anything to shoot a band. The novelty kind of wore off after about my 3rd one. Always a little extra excitement when yiu shoot one, but there’s nothing like it he adrenaline rush when a target bird is killed or you see that weird one circling the spread. Once it’s identified, there might be 100 other birds in the flock, but none matter anymore. There is one bird and that’s the bird you’re calling at.

Hoping when life slows down in a couple years, we can figure out a decoy collaboration hunt. Might be kind of neat and certainly fun. You know how crazy my schedule is all the time though. But I agree, you need to get cold again and sniff some shotgun smoke soon.
