This past Sunday I ran and completed my first marathon. When I set this goal, and entered the lottery for the event, I contacted Terry to ask for his families approval to run in memory of his nephew Ben. It was a source of strength and focus through the 500 miles of training this summer, and got me through on Sunday. Terry sent me a couple shirts to wear for the event, and I wore them as I ran some of my long training runs (up to 27 miles) and also ran wearing them at both the Army 10Miler on the 12th, and the Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday. I got many pats on the back and whispers of Semper Fi from fellow runners. I can tell you it is not easy to run with tears in your eyes and a catch in your throat, but it can not compare with the sacrifice of these fine servicemen and servicewomen and their families. At the end of the marathon, typical of all Marine Corps races, you have to "take the hill" as the finish is at the base of the Iwo Jima memorial. Both sides of that hill are lined with Marines, cheering you on. It is so exhilarating and humbling.
To all who have served and sacrificed, and your families, thank you, Semper Fi
