Introduce myself

John, Welcome to the site. Incredible decoys. Thanks for joining the best group of guys on the net.

Welcome John! I have admired your decoys on the DCF for some time. I look forward to seeing them here. Bob steered you in the right direction. Very good people here!!!..............................Kevin

Welcome aboard!

Your surf scoter that I got from you last year at Westlake is at my work station in my office. It is enjoyed daily!!

I am getting ready to do some carving and painting. I'll be picking your brain about oils.

Sorry I am going to miss Westlake this year.

Best,
Steve

Hi John,
I'm the guy you talked to at Pymatuning about my greenwing drake. I've since made a few 2x10 birds
that turned out well. (They'll never look like yours) I will look you up at Westlake so we can talk about oils.
You'll like the guys on this site,
John

Lady and gentlemen,

A general thank you for the warm welcome. I've received some PM's and a bunch of emails from this site already, it very nice.

If you are familiar with DCF you've seen how nasty it got over the last year. I correspond with many other decoy makers on a regular basis. Several of which are looking for another alternative to the Temple of Tom.

Like I already wrote, I'll be glad to help with decoy making.

I've done tutorials for the other site. Maybe we could start something like that here, if people are interested.

Thanks again.

Welcome aboard John. Do you make any gunning decoys? Those look nice but I am afraid to ask the cost. I am looking for working decoys. Got any?

Hey John, Good to see you here. If you have a picture of it, that Redhead that you took to Westlake would be real nice to see again. I loved that thing. I wish I could sit and drink another beer with you again this year at Westlake, but unfortunately I have to work that weekend.

Old regular on here, Lee Harker used to expound upon the virtues of 2 X material, http://www.duckboats.net/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=9778;search_string=carving%20tu%20ba;#9778, I remember him often talking about searching through the piles and finding some really good wood to use.

I have used it myself on a couple of decoys. I would recommend NOT using ones with really prominent growth rings.

John, you mention tutorials, that one you were posting on developing personal style would be much appreciated over here too. http://decoycarvingforum.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/4216067104/m/702106313 there are several carvers, at many different skill levels so anything you have to offer is going to be well received.

See yah around.

Welcome, those of us that have been here a while are all too familiar to the vitriol and arrogance of those in question. We ran them out of here years ago, to this forum's benefit. There are a lot of strong personalities here with their own opinions, but we get along well enough.

Eric,

Nice to here from you, sorry that you won't be able to make the show this year. I have pictures of that redhead but they aren't available to me right now, they are on one of those zip drive things and my wife has it right now and she is out of town until tomorrow.

Here is a photo of another redhead it's the same idea same body pattern but I exposed the wing and raised the head. This decoy was featured in Hunting and Fishing Collectibles Magazine in September 09.

And yes all my decoys are for gunning. Like I said I hunt over them and have for years. They are high end though, although not as high end as some. Please contact me privately for prices. If you are coming to Westlake I will have about 20 or so there please stop by Room 158 and take a look.

As for a tutorial how about something new rather than re-hashing that one?

Any ideas?

Help on posting the photo would be appreciated.

First of all welcome, and since you were looking for ideas I would like to see something for beginners!!!! Those are some great looking decoys, but way out of my league.

Yah, I am bummed too, but I plan on being there next year.

Nice red, you always have character in your birds, I like that.

As far as photo help, I am not much on that one, I just save it to photoshop or some of those deals then hit the little picture frame thing above on the tool bar and insert url.

Ask Steve Sutton (moderator here) or do a quick search, I believe the correct instructions have been posted a time or 6.

Prices? What do you mean prices? Arn't all your decoys made just to swap? LOL

As far as tutorials, eye setting would be number one. Then getting head poses down so you get all the anatomy in the right spot would be number 2.

Later.

Kris,

I was able to extract all of the style thread last night and then I asked a friend to delete it. My wish is to have no affliliation with that group going forward.

However, I have asked the administrators here if it would be okay to repost on this web page. It's 8 parts and pretty extensive and being new to the party I just want to make sure.

Since we are currently in the process of being snowed in here I could get most if not all of it up this weekend.

I would appreciate it if someone could get a message to Mike Chase on that web page as to where it is. He's the soldier over in Afghanistan that I mailed the decoy blanks to. I don't have anyway of contacting him. I know that he was using it also.

no problem on the "steps" to complete the picture thing on a post....and don't worry about being a member of the "nerd herd"....If I can do anyone can.....

And on the "tutorial" being posted on the site ABSOLUTELY, we'd love to have it here....post it and we'll make it a sticky while we're deciding where the best place to store it for future reference is......appreciate it and I know there are lots of poeple that will as well...

Steve

Okay then,

I'll probably be able to get to at least some of it tomorrow. We were planning on running a couple of my dogs on pheasants but the current weather info is 9-12" by morning. And with our hills that means staying home is most likely.

A little warning for everyone. I had the IT guys at the University of Pittsburgh extract a little thing called a "tracking cookie" from my computer this morning. Seems a certain someone has it embedded in any "official" email from that other web page. They said it could enable him to track all of your email activity, they weren't sure exactly how strong that one is though. If you've had any email contact from that web site I'd have my computer screened asap.
