ISO 15hp - which have tiller shifting?

I have started looking for an outboard for the sneakbox. I am assuming I will prefer the forward/reverse control be on the tiller? What brands offered this on the 15 hp? Am I assuming incorrectly?

TIA, Dave

Dave, I know Merc had some tiller shifters and from personal experience they are a tough one to work on, great to run (very handy) but if some thing should screw up they are hatefull to work on. I know owners who will dispuute this but my $.02. Do you have a reach problem or just want it easy to run?

Keep in mind, I am thinking here, don't have personal experience yet. I see the pictures posted of BBSBs usually with extended tillers. I figured reaching back to shift would be a PITA? But that is why I posted to the brain trust.... Are there features that I should make sure I find? Anything that would specify a particular year range?

Thanks, Dave

Dave,

Have had a tiller shift, 15 HP Merc (2 stroke) since '97. I use it on my TDB 14 with an extension handle. Haven't had any trouble at all. Just a runnin' hunk of metal, easy maintenance & very dependable. Has never been in the shop. Change lower unit lube every season, hit grease fittings, and put in a new set of plugs - that's it.

Dave, I have a 2003 15 hp. mercury with shift handle ,on my HAWK like the TDB with a 30" extention handle by bass pro it works fine for me but i'm thinking I would like to go with a longer handle 36 t0 51 extention this will enable me to go towards the bow a lot more to get me on plain faster, because with the decoys ,dog grassing etc. I'm carring a big load.Note there is a problem with the clamp on the extension handle getting loose because of pressure use so I'm thinking of putting a hose clamp over it this should work hope this info helps you out .Cas
