Ka-Jo Duck Skiff

Britt~

That boat looks great - congratulations on all the progress!

Question: The nav lights look great, but - is your image reversed left-right? When your boat is upright, your green light needs to be on the right-hand (starboard) side; red on left (port). The point of reference is you, at the helm, facing the bow.

(You can probably just switch the lenses in your shark-eyes if you need to...)

All the best,

SJS

Steve, I caught that after I took the picture too...lol It is no big deal though. I was just dry fitting everything. I ran out of epoxy, so I am waiting on that to come in. What have you used to fill the weave on the glass? Also, have you ever heard of wearlon wetlander? It looks pretty good, but very well may be over kill... my experience with boats is very limited believe it or not.

John, thanks for the kind words. Encouragement is always appreciated!

Thanks,
Britt

Britt~

Filling the weave is a pain, especially if gravity is working against you. I usually add some Cabosil to reduce the running. I have no great answers and would welcome others' advice/experience, too.

Not familiar with Wearrlon Wetlander.....

Steve, I talked to the people that I ordered my epoxy from, jgreer.com, and they recommend I use both microspheres and a cabosil mix. I figure that is the route that I will go. My stuff should be here in 5-7 days. I hope to make a bunch of dust after it arrives... lol

Britt~

Did they recommend one final straight coat after the weave is filled? My understanding is that the microspheres are vulnerable to moisture if not completely sealed - so I have avoided using them below the waterline unless they will be beneath the 'glass itself.

Thanks for the info!

Steve,
Sorry for taking so long to get back with you. I am at work and things are really busy... as usual. Anyways, the person that I talked to did not mention that at all. I did plan on putting a finish layer of epoxy on before the bottom paint... I will call them back Monday if work permits me the time and see about this. I will post what they tell me.

Thanks,
Britt

Steve,
I finally got a chance to talk to the people at jgreer.com They recommend that I put a thin layer of clean epoxy over the microspheres after sanding to make sure that everything is sealed. Sorry it took so long to reply, work can get really busy at times.
One other question, for anyone, Has anyone tried an Evinrude E-Tec out? The performance sheets that I have read are pretty impressive, just wanted some real world knowledge if I could get it. I am looking at the 25 E-Tec with a 20" shaft.

Thanks,
Britt

Hopefully I will have some pictures to add tomorrow of my sanding job. I am trying to get to a point that I can put some bottom paint on once I get back from work. Sanding is the DEVIL!

Britt

Hi Brit,

I've been following your progress and it looks great. I wish to very much agree that sanding is the devil! I'm building a boat and must have sanded it dozens of times. I don't know why the process is referred to as "fairing". It's anything but fair!

Good luck!

Britt~

I use Photobucket (free download) to upload the copy and paste my photos - without the size restriction.

All the best,

SJS

Kris, thanks for the compliments. Building a boat is a marathon, and every little bit of encouragement really helps me refocus. So thanks for taking the time to post!

Steve, I will look into photobucket before I post again. As for now, I rough cut the fore and aft decks. I just had to see how it will look... lol. I plan on putting plywood down the gunnels on both side and maybe come down the ribs 2" ( not sure what they would call that part... maybe a shear clamp? ) I am also going to put some 1 x 4 fir (encapsulated with epoxy) for the sole. I still have a lot of work to do. Hopefully, when I get back from work I can have the interior work done and start really thinking hard about the decks and deck hatches.

Thank you guys again for looking and posting up. It really does put wind in my sails knowing that I am not the only one enjoying this thread.
