Ka-Jo Duck Skiff

Britt~

That boat is coming along beautifully! It looks like you are enclosing your wiring in a plastic tubing/conduit - what is it you are using?

All the best,

SJS

Steve,

I am not sure of the technical name of the conduit, but it is 3/4" flexible conduit tubing. The paper for it says it is waterproof when properly sealed. This project is really starting to get fun, my family is getting really excited about it too! I will hopefully wrap it up in a couple of months, this is turning out to be so much more than just a "duck hunting boat"

Britt

John, thank you for the kind words. My wife is already looking at much bigger boats... her train of thought is, "why buy a camper when you can make a big boat?" Needless to say, we are looking a different designs from Spira International and Devlin.

Here are a few more pictures of what I have been working on. For the jack plate, I removed it and drilled the holes a little bigger and filled with thickened epoxy. I don't have any pictures of that, but it is pretty self explanatory.

In the next few weeks:

1. put a couple of skegs on the bottom.
2. paint the bottom in gatorglide.
3. paint the sides and flip again.
4. make a box for the battery compartment to separate it from the fuel.
5. coat the inside with another coat of epoxy.
6. coat the decks with epoxy and fiberglass them.
7. paint the topsides.
8. install the rub rail.
9. weigh the boat.
10. put on motor.
11. get with LDWF and get registered.
12. go for a boat ride!

Hope you guys enjoy the pictures.

Here is some more progress. I was given a small trailer, so I put the boat on it. I am pricing new trailers locally, so far the best price I have found is $1600.00. Does this sound right to you guys for a trailer that can handle an 18' by 48" boat?
I have some pictures of the boat after I beveled the edges in preparation for glass work. I taped the seams on the back deck and transom area for extra strength. I then laid 6oz glass cloth on the decks and gunnels. I am fixing to order paint and primer and then set a date with the LDWF to get her registered.
Hope you guys enjoy the pictures. We are getting close to a launch date!

Yes, you definitely need a longer trailer. Pricing varies by location and you have nothing in your profile to indicate where your are located. The price seems low but for a boat that long and narrow, I don't know.

Huntindave McCann,
I am located in Southwest Louisiana. I have talked to several marine dealerships and they are all within $100-200 of each other. I plan on getting the trailer in a week or two. I will have to edit my profile to give an idea of my location...

Steven,
Thanks for the nice comments. I used Gator Glide below the water line and Interlux Brightside's Kingston Gray on the sides. We plan on using Interlux Brightside's Seattle Gray for the decks. I am hoping to have everything registered by mid September. It is time to enjoy my labor.

Sorry it has been so long since I posted anything. Life gets in the way sometimes... On a good note though, the motor came in! I mounted it on a jackplate! We have not had good enough weather to prime and paint the inside and topside decks as of yet. My son, 8yrs old, said we have to catch a fish before we can hunt from it lol. As the master wishes! I am going to go get the paperwork from LDWF tomorrow and hopefully have it registered soon. Hope you guys enjoy the pictures. I can't wait until I can get it wet!

Finally got the boat in the water! I still have to paint the top sides, but I couldn't wait. I had to splash her. Here is what I have found out so far. I draft about 4" of water with 750# of personnel, fuel, battery, ice chests, and motor. I am sure that I could do better on draft if I were so inclined to build another one like this. I really over built her. I have a 2000 model Johnson 25hp on it. I clocked a top speed of 24mph with the aforementioned weight. I am sure that I can get a few more mph out of it with some tweaking. I have one skeg on the bottom and did not have any issues in turns. I am still learning how she handles, but so far, I am really happy with the design. I think it will do exactly what I was hoping for.

Now the next steps will be to get my grass blind built up. I will post pics of that once I get done. I need to hurry up though, duck season opens for us next week. Hope you enjoy the pics.

My son and I went on his first duck hunting trip. I did not shoot that great, but we managed to get one. He said he had a blast and wants to go back tomorrow! Let the fun begin. I hope you have enjoyed the build, and thank you to all that have given advise and given encouragement.
