Kalash Layout shakedown..wet but not bloodied 1/7/12

This will be the 2nd year towing. Still learning ,but by the end of the season tried something different .The under side of the boat i built like the bow of a john with a keel . I have my towing cleat write on the bow edge, the 2 10# anchors we put all the way in the back. My boat has 6" lifting handles on the transome .Took a 2x4 24" and cut it to fit inside the one handle with a stop . so the board is around 16"above the deck .Mounted a clip on the top side of the board when we tow we hoist the bow up if the boat hits the back dont care cause it hits the 2x4

Pat, very similar to what I was thinking.... I was thinking about a pr of verticals with a cross bar, that put the nose of the layout above the outboard, centered on the stern... as Bob B mentioned, no backing up with this set-up! Not sure I want that apparatus messing up my BBSB though.... Puts a lot of stress on the grab handles too... and in turn the transom. i like the Tender idea much better.... was thinking about a cradle for the tender that is lined with plastic pipe so the layout will slide easily.... but it is a big and heavy layout for 2 guys to load into the tender?

Trying to lift that heavy bitch back on the bow was a pain in the ass where we hunt, we tow now . If you come up with something tell me

Deck is now painted.....

Need to sew a hem and webbing to the spray curtain to be strong enough for the snaps to be installed.

Close to being done!

Dave

Got the spray curtain installed. Tried the snaps, but they were not tight enough. Changed over to SS screws and finish washers installed first every 6 inches. I then injected 3M 5200 under the canvas and then added another screw/washer between each of the original, so they are now 3 inches apart. Let it cure a few days, and then the last steps will be to install the foam in the bow and stern. And need to figure out the lifting support hardware/method..... either bimini tracks and hardware or the easy way, the block of wood!

Luke we do plan to hunt it this season..... we have not seen many birds yet, after Christmas we have a month of the season left and that is when the divers should arrive. Would have been nice to take it out in the warm weather to figure it out... but that is duck hunting!

Dave

Dave,
That came out really nice. You will have a blast hunting divers outta that. Good luck with it.

Dave

You have done some excellent work and craftmanship of an old tool of the trade...Wish I had the ability to create such a master piece...

Regards,

Kristan

Hi Dave. Pics of blood on the deck would be great, but don't forget some pics of somebody hunting in it!

That thing looks nice.....

John

We have been having ridiculous warm weather this duck season... well in the 60s yesterday here and while we had some shooting, is slowed in the afternoon and decided to do a shakedown with the Kalash. Since we don't have a real tender, we had too improvise. Decided to try a tow dingy method.... and it worked well. Used a 10ft aluminum row boat that is normally used as a stool boat for long lines. A large foam noodle split and attached to the transom protected the Kalash. A pr of lines attached to the bottom tow eyes pulling forward, and a line lashed over the deck to hold her tight and she was ready to go. Towed her with my sneakbox... and could get 6 mph with 2 of us in the box, and 2 dozen decoys in the stool boat. When we hunt this we will need another boat for sure, but we could easily transfer from the sneakbox to the Kalash, and also to the stool boat. The Kalash was very stable, much more than I had anticipated, though I had no experience to compare too other than trying to layout in an aquapod some years ago. The Kalash could be stood in! Easy to move around, and work both ends of the spray curtain and cleats. Could kneel and reach over the end to retrieve the anchor with no issues. With this shake down, we have decided where to install a pair of cleats in the stool boat, and a pair of pad eyes to make it quick to set up and get going for the real hunts. Our goose season extends beyond the duck season, our first real layout may be a goose hunt?
