Lessers, Greaters and Gadwalls

The "good ole days" continue in coastal Alabama.
Woke up to 40 degrees and steady 20-25 knot wind out of the north. That wind killed hunting the big water down south for redheads so we hunted the upper end of Mobile Bay instead.
The run from the ramp to the grass flats was mostly protected, so it was a pretty smooth ride until we got close to our spot. Pulled off the channel onto the shallow flat and boy it got bumpy.
Found a spot I had previously marked in the summer where I know there is some Vallisneria and anchored the boat bow into the wind, which was now really howling a steady 25kts.
Even though we were only in 2' of water with 6' of anchor line on the decoys, I had to step on the anchors to make sure they held. Had to reset a few wanderers from time to time until I had them all secure. Even with all the wind & chasing decoys, we were all set up at 5:30.
Shooting time was 6:20. At 6:25 a redhead dropped into the decoys. I shot, it dove. Popped up 50 yards out and flew off like I didn't touch it, which I hope was the case.
5 minutes later, a nice drake gaddie drops in to stay.
Another 5 minutes go by and two bluebills buzz the boat and I drop one. At this point, I decide to wake up the boy, who went to sleep after we got the blind set up!
The rest of the morning we had pretty constant action as flocks of rafted up birds lifted up off the open bay to come north to the flats.
We saw tons of gadwalls, 99.9999% of which would approach to about 70 yards and then fly off to go else where. Only got shots at two small groups and didn't cut a feather.
But the bluebills put on the real show. Singles, pairs and small flocks decoys readily. The boy shot great today. And he shot our only greater 'bill too. After we both had out limits of 'bills, we watched them land and then feed in & out of the decoys. Could have easily shot a 6 bird limit of 'bills. Its been years since I have seen bluebills in these numbers on Mobile Bay. It was a very welcome sight to see!
One strange thing is that we did not see a single hen bluebill, out of about 20 the came by, all were drakes. Weird.
Called it quits around 11:00 when the gadwalls seemed to stop flying (not like they were going to decoy anyway). Not many buffies around our spot today, which is unusual. No Cans this time either.
On the way home, the boy & I both agreed on where we will be again tomorrow morning.

Nice pile of birds. Its good to see you are getting that boy hooked on hunting.

Tim

Best season I have had since 2004-05. Actually only really good season since then.
Averaging just over 4 birds per hunt and out of 8 hunts all but one have been quality hunts.

He's been hooked for a while now, but he is just now got the size and upper body strength to be able to really shoot well.
Really in a groove today. He didn't miss a single "easy" shot. Great confidence builder.

Send some up north.

I am not going to average four birds for the entire season. Whole estuaries devoid of ducks that should hold hundreds and in some years thousands.

We had more ducks here in August than now.

OK Carl. You keep this up and Mobile is definitely on my retirement radar! Good for you guys. Hope your season continues.

Ed, Mobile is a great area to retire! Low housing cost, low property and income tax, great fishing, good duck hunting and the beaches are less than an hour away!

Yes we are Carl, til the 9 th of January, a lot of birds have left the area I,m in , -10 for tomorrow nite hoping to get another push of divers in but if it doesn't happen it's still been a good year! All the best to you & your son on your travels waterfowling.

As soon as I get on duckboats.net, the first thing I do, Carl, is look for your name. If I see it, I know I have a good chance to be reading all about a great hunt. I'm happy for you. This is good to see. Thanks for the pictures also. They are like the dessert.

Thanks for the pictures and story Carl. Looks like a great day in the marsh. I hope today is the same or better. It's nice to see open water. We're finally locked in snow and ice in north east Wisconsin.

Congratulations!

Don't feel bad,Carl, when Joe and I were hunting the blow from Super Storm Sandy a few years back on Lake Michigan's coastal bays, flock after flock of scaup would swing and set-in...everyone was a hen the vast majority of the time for the groups that put their feet down. One group of about fifty birds had one lone drake in it who landed on the outside edge. Of course we had made a decision while setting-up that we would shoot only drakes! As you state, fun to watch them bob around and feed, even if you are slowly freezing.

Carl,
You mention "grass flats." I find it interesting that you have grass flats in Mobile Bay and there were vast grass flats up on Pamlico Sound in NC but here in SC there are no grass flats. I suppose that is probably tide related. We have 6-8' tides twice per day. NC has about 1-2' tides and I think you have about that also.

Grass equals food equals birds.

Good for you.

Larry

As Pat said, you are killing me. This is not fair, no bills in our area of southern ohio, river is way too high to hunt if there were any birds they went south with the flow.
We have some time left maybe we will catch a few in late january if the weather cooperates.
Glad to hear you and the boy are having fun, thanks for the post and pictures.

You're welcome.
Time to break out the jigging rod and head to the ice shanty up there??
