Live Trap Skunk Removal - NDR

Finally caught the skunk which was destroying our yard as it was digging under all our oak trees for locust. Got to watch an expert(a friend who is out of the business now due to a promotion at his full time job a year or so ago) cover the live trap and eventually transfer the skunk from my smaller live trap to his large live trap which he had on the back of his truck. Kudos to him--he was like a skunk whisperer!!

I had watched a bunch of you tube videos of how to do this, and was full game to try it. However once I saw Mr Skunk in the cage, I got cold feet!! So glad I didnt have to try to cover it, put it in back of side by side, then release it! Guys who do this live trap skunk removal thing have big balls for sure!! Maybe next time I will attempt it, but probably not-lol.

Wish I would have taken pics and/or video of him doing this.

Your story made me think of my brother's Vizsla. That dog was a sucker for punishment. Lost count of the times he was sprayed by a skunk.

Thankfully not needing to trap skunks, I have lost 7 chickens this year to raccoons. Seems they out smarted me all summer. Looking into trap and release laws here in Illinois it seems the laws are written in favor of the varmit! Release is only permitted on the property where the racoon is trapped. A lot of good that does when my property is a third of an acre! Seems other actions are in order if it continues. I did find where they were getting in so that has been eliminated but they are persistent.

Chicken is second only to fish as far as my favorite meal. You are extending much more latitude than I would if it were my chicken dinner we were talking about.

I caught a few skunks back in the day trapping in NEPA. Never a good outcome for either of involved parties!
When we had chickens the best defense was our lab who thought the chickens were part of the pack. Never lost a bird when she was with them. Same growing up in PA, family dogs kept watch over the chickens.

Once again, I am blessed to live in Maine. When I was on my woodchuck jihad a few years back--the little buggers had eliminated all of my broccoli, cabbage, and brocollini just as they were close to harvest, then shifted attention to my lettuce and beans--I kept getting raccoons as by-catch in my Have-a-Hearts. I'd arranged for a landowner who was willing to let me move my woodchucks across the Kennebec River, but he was unwilling to accept my raccoons. So I called the state DIFW to ask what the law was, and it turns out that in Maine you can legally relocate any trapped wild animal to any parcel of publicly-owned land, or any private land with permission. I think this technically meant I could legally release them on the grounds of the Governor's mansion in Augusta, which is only a few miles from the house, and I did consider this approach over something the governor did that made me mad (no longer remember what it was). But I took them to a local Wildlife Management Area instead. I was very glad never to get a skunk in those traps. The raccoons were nasty enough to have to release. This year the deer, for the second year in a row--have turned my pole bean trellis into a topiary statue. All that's left are the handful of vines that climbed taller than the deer can reach.
