long distance retriever play...

Edit- oops. Just saw that it needs to be neighbor friendly. Probably need a kid/bird boy then. My dogs love the 22 blank launcher but I wouldn't fire it off in the backyard.

I have some brown .22 loads used in nailers that are quite quiet and launch a dummy well over fifty yards that I picked-up at the hardware store. I like the concept that these condition the dog that the noise will result in a retrieve possibility, as well as the ability to apply scent to the canvs dummies. The smaller hard plastic projectiles sail well beyond 70 yards.

I have one of the .22 dummy launchers. I mounted it to a stake, and with a long line can remotely launch it, but it is a one shot deal. I had a .22 revolver given to me, and I took it and the dummy launcher to a machinist. He replicated the launcher shaft with o-ring. He then removed the front site on the revolver, cut a slot in the barrel to align with a set screw on the launcher shaft he reproduced. Now I can launch 10 dummies in quick succession. Only do doubles and triples really, but can make multiple marks with out distracting the dog reloading. Brian Garman has it now, as I don't have a dog currently. Maybe I can get a picture.

Have the dog heal and stay, walk out 50-100 yards and then throw the bumper(s), then give the retriever command.
That's my technique.

Tod,

When we first got Kaden,

I had a bufflehead that I froze solid and shoved in a pair of panty hose...

I think I was considering mounting the bird and had tucked it into the panty hose so that the feathers wouldn't get fouled up, but for one reason or another, something happened to it and it ended up being a dummy for the red dog to chase and fetch and find in the brush all winter long.

It is amazing how well a frozen solid bird holds up in a pair of panty hose.

It was settled into where the foot would have gone should a lady have donned them. The length of the legging made for an excellent sling type of toss and it would go a really long ways.

Sometimes id drag it along the trail and toss it into the brush and have Kaden find it.

He had such fun with it.

Yes a long time ago. UNC 72-76. But the best part of lax was my coach took me duck hunting for the first time. Had a draw at Bodie Island. 25 degrees, gusting winds, snow and I was addicted for life!

Thanks all, I love the dummy launcher, but it is just too loud, especially at sunrise, which is when we run him the first time of the day this time of year. Jen is on duty when I'm hunting without the dog and she is not going to use a dummy launcher.

The water balloon launcher is an awesome idea and I have to admit that I still have a bit of tennis elbow (fishing elbow, really) that chucking the dummy aggravates.

I'm going to get a lacrosse stick and give it a try (I have a research student on the lacrosse team, that I can get lessons from if I need them [smile] ).
