Long Island Ice Scooter - Rehab efforts - 8/30 update, Anchor box and input for motor box

The majority of the hull work is complete. I had received a mis-matched pair of oar locks in the hull, so that would not do! I found a pair and followed Tom's methods to create a new pair.
Tom Prudente was in the plumbing trade.... I suspect he designed/fabricated this style himself:

I then spent sometime noodling out a plan for the windbreak/dodger. I was not looking to create a full dodger for this hull, wanted it maintain as low a profile as practical. Just something to keep the back of your neck protected from the wind.
I went through 2 other designs before settling on Plan C.

The canvas will snap to the deck, using the same snap locations as the soft cockpit cover will use. I have a thought to make the cockpit cover serve double duty as both the cover and the lap apron?
So here are the finger cleats for the lap apron bungees:

The canvas, thread, webbing and shock cord are all in hand. I have a plan to go up to visit Mom on Friday for some fabricating and sewing. If the Tuckerton gathering occurs on Saturday, I will plan to splash her there.
Spars are all painted, sail is set to mast, oars are painted, but will likely get leathers yet. After this weekend, I need to pull out the 1938 Neptune OB that I had gotten running a couple years ago. Clean it up, and fire it up again to complete the display.
Little side projects I may yet tackle before the season are a tray/box to store the anchor, and a rowing seat.

Great details all around! What wood did you use for those cleats ? Looks like a nice, dense species.

I will get you some measurements for a rowing seat later today.

BTW: Your oarlocks reminded of the grassboat I first shot from. It had open (horn) locks welded to about 10 inches of 1/2-inch galvanized pipe - which set into sockets right on the deck.

All the best,

SJS

Steve, I have been working through my stash of IPE for the finger cleats. The blocks for the windbreak are also IPE. I bought a bunch of end cuts and scrap from a guy after his deck was complete 5 years ago and am careful not to waste it. I actually removed some parts I built with it from the BBSB last season and am repurposing it all as I can. This stuff is hard and tight. You must predrill or will break the screws. My ice runners on the BBSB and the keel are all IPE and all the cleats on that sail rig are too.
For the Scooter, I had some small bronze cleats I used. I tend to pick up those small bits and pieces whenever I come across them and have a stash in the garage of bronze and other boat parts.
No hurry on the rowing seat... it will be a few weeks until I get to it. Marathon training cuts into my weekends from here on out.... 15 miles plus takes me a few hours and after that I have little ambition!

Dave~

I cannot imagine running anywhere in this summer's heat!

Here is the info re the Rowing Seat/Back Rest from the Benjamin Hallock Scooter TED SANFORD.

I guess I will never know - unless I come across another seat just like it in another Hallock boat - whether it was made by Mr. Hallock or by my Dad. It is especially nice because it serves as both backrest and rowing seat. It is difficult to get the dimensions just right so that any "device" can do both. I was lucky to be able to do it on my Sneakbox re-build (RED-LEG) - to which I added an inch of foam for padding.....

I am guessing it is made of White Pine or Cypress - it seems too hard to be Whitecedar.

All the best,

SJS

Thank you Steve, on the Ted Sanford does the backrest free stand when used as a backrest? It would need to be higher I think in my hull if it rests against the front coaming?

Dave~

No - it wedges perfectly between the coaming and the floorboard. One"leg" rest below the coaming and the other on the floorboard.

I have tried to make these double-duty seat/backrests on a number of boats - but I think you just have to be lucky.

BTW: I like my backrests at about 50 degrees of angle.

All the best,

SJS

It was a busy weekend! Thursday evening I trailered the scooter up to Mom's in SE PA. Friday morning we got busy on the canvas work.

First up was the soft cockpit cover. I have a hard cover that you can see above. But it is a PITA to deal with that at the ramp all the time. The soft cover will be for local travel/hunts. The hard cover for when the scooter must be in the weather or trailering long distance.

Needed to work these in a certain order to have the deck snaps do dual duty for both the cockpit cover and the windbreaker.

One set of snaps were purposely not installed as they would be positioned based on where the windbreaker ended.

So onto the windbreaker. This was a lot of pinning and tucking to get it to lay well. Pictures of Steve Sanford's dodger were close at hand!

Not pictured, we also made a lap apron. I originally thought to make the cockpit cover serve both, but it was too much bulk. We had the material so we knocked it out too.

Then Saturday, I trailered up the Duckboat gathering and splashed her!

And just because, I had to set the sail.

I just cleated the halyard and watched her sail up wind on anchor. It was very windy, so I did not want to try to sail it and have to row against the wind if I could not point her. Will mess with it in lighter winds at some point.

Empty she rides higher than I thought she would. But with me inside it was better.

I think in hunting cloths and gear she may be OK. Maybe a couple sandbags?

Phil, I just made up the sail plan myself. I made this for an attention getter.... I have poked around the Sailrite site and found a couple sprit sail kits that I may order if I really want to sail her.

Dave, great job. Looks great with the sail. All the sails I've seen were all home made and of varying sizes. Sits well in the water. Time to put on the bathing suit and go for it...

Good morning, Dave~

Congratulations! I am sure both Dodge AND Krowl would be proud!

- can't wait to see it next month!

SJS

Dave,
It was great to see you and the Scooter! I look forward to hearing about your exploits with it this season.

I think I have the hull complete, with the exception of one last coat of paint to make everything uniform. Sunday after church, I installed the finger cleats, the grommets in the lap apron, and seized the shock cord.

From here on out, there are just odds and ends to finish...

I put a final coat of paint on the decks to blend in the finger cleats and snaps.

I then taught myself the Turk's Head and installed a pair on the spruce oars to act as buttons.

I built a cedar box, lined to inside bottom with carpet and glued carpet to the bottom. The box will contain the anchors and minimize the banging around I hope.

Next up after a 15 mile training run this weekend.... get the 1938 Neptune OB cleaned up, freshen the fuel and get it running again. I also got a gunwale strap for the back end tiedown, but it is too long, so I will cut it down and try to get the sewing machine tension right. If I had the strap last weekend Mom would have made short order of it!

I see that the sister hull to mine is still sitting in Port Washington, awaiting a new owner and sprucing up! Someone needs to get it!

Scooter poles are done finally! What a fiasco this was. I searched on-line and found very few options for 8ft ash poles. Amazing how just picking different search words will affect your search results. Anyway I found some on eBay, and then on Amazon. Drilling down to the supplier website, they were a few dollars cheaper direct.... but customer service was terrible! Empire Rigging, out of NY. Anyway, I ordered a bundle of 3 poles, with shipping $77. A few days later 1 pole arrived. I waited a couple days and then contacted them to inquire. Took them several emails and phone calls to respond. Then they said there was an error on the website and that was the listing for 1 pole! This was not the case, because they listed another part number for one pole for $38! They agreed to send the other 2 while they worked to fix the website. So I wait a couple more weeks, and still don't have the poles. After several more emails and phone calls, finally I get a tracking number which shows they were delivered 2 weeks earlier.... but obviously not to my house! Turns out, they delivered to a house 4 doors down, and they renter there was on business for several weeks! Picked them up Thursday...

The grey is for the scooter, the green for the BBSB.

I then messed with the outboards I have in mind for the scooter....
A few years ago I picked up a 1938 2hp Neptune. I was able to get it running then, but it has sat for a couple years. I pulled it out and cleaned it again, but find the spark is pretty weak. I will dig into but maybe not before Tuckerton. In any case, I fabricated a couple "leashes" for both the Neptune, and the 1982 2hp Evinrude that I will use on the scooter.

An outboard leash, what a good idea hummm. Maybe if I had a time machine. Oh well the Neptune looks good and you can always sail right????
