Lost artwork (sort of)

I did this painting of good friend and colleague Mike Scheibel back in the early 90s, when I took a few art courses at Suffolk Community College. Mike's wife Lynne just photographed it and sent the image to me today.

Mike is standing amongst the dead timber - Red Maple and Green Ash - in the flooded impoundment at Upper & Lower Lakes WMA in northeastern NY. For almost twenty years, we would journey across the state, from Long Island, to hunt in early October. It gave us a 6-week jump on our LI season.

I call this painting "The White Shirt". Hiding was so easy in the available cover. The vegetation came in many colors - I wore a brick red sweater for many seasons there - and all you really had to do was stand still. You could even shoot birds whilst wearing a white shirt.

Some other painting odds and ends are at http://stevenjaysanford.com/odds-ends/

I have good intentions of doing more serious painting - but all of these boats and decoys - and even some gunning - keep getting in the way.

All the best,

Thanks for this Steve. That is a great painting that captures the scene as you describe it. There is a ton of character in your portrayal of Mike.

I love seeing flat art from decoy carvers and painters. When I think of decoy carving artists, I often think of Dick Benson of Ohio and his transition to painting later in life. Although I didn't know him as well as many, I really enjoyed our conversations and his work and I still miss the guy. Bob Furia is another that comes to mind. MLBob constantly amazes me with his remarques on boxes etc. Of course there are also the recent comments about the art of Dave Hagerbaumer but there are others I see from time to time on duckboats.net.

I would love to see a thread dedicated to the paintings by duckboat members.

Wow
I like the rubber waders. You really captured the bulky rubber wader look.
The last person that I can remember that were rubber waders was you.

Looks damn good for only a few art courses. Speaks to your talent and I would love to see some work when you get into "more serious painting".

Steve,

Thank you for finding this site! I love seeing your work and your style suits my tastes. Keep up the good work...now I'm off to your site to see the rest of the odds and ends.
