March 2014 Workbench Thread

Ron, really like the coconut decoy!!
Got back from a recent snow goose hunt and was inspired to try my hand on a Ross. I think I am going to mount it on a black walnut base.

Brian~

That Ross has tons of presence - beautiful job! Your idea of a bust for this species is elegant, too.

All the best,

SJS

Brian I have held a lot of Rossie's and you indeed nailed it! Now if you could get some Ross texture on the upper bill you have it perfected! I don't even need to see paint.

What a great thread every month. I don't have anything except a urn right now to share and that is a private item for the owner so I don't want to post pictures of it. Ill have a few birds soon to show.

Ron, That coconut is such a cool idea what inspired it?

Tom, Thanks for sharing your work. Nothing to add from me except keep at it. Your starting out a lot better then I did!

Jode, Sweet bird!

Brian, Very cool, will it get paint or be left finished natural?

A friend of mine was driving by Biscayne Bay and stopped to look at what he thought was a small raft of blue bills. He realized they we not ducks but a raft of coconuts floating lazily along the current. A light of a bright idea emerged and he started making coconut decoys with some primitive looking heads. He came to the house and I showed him how to carve a head and I decided to make a few myself. The ducks seem to like them!

It is difficult to find a coconut with the hard chines of a decoy so they do move around a lot. They also take on water which changes their float dynamics. My wife told George (the original coco coy maker) that she really liked his egret confidence coco coy so when we came home one day there was an egret coconut feeding in our plants.

holy crap there are some nice birds on this month's thread!!!!! I will not name any names because I would forget someone. To all carvers, WELL DONE Men.

Had an old chair at the duck club that needed to be upholstered. When I took it to the upholstery shops for bids they wanted 500-800 dollars to do the work. I guess im going learn upholstery I say to myself. Its like restoring a boat . Take alot of notes and pictures and it goes smooth. I used a solid fabric so the pattern repeat didnt stump me. Got it done and moved on to the next duck club project.

This was our old clubhouse table painted in awful Packers colors yellow and green. I stripped it and found quartersawn white oak underneath. Who would paint over that figure. There was a date 1902 on the sliding hardware underneath. It might not go back to the clubhouse, says wife. I have to keep stuff like this on the down low in the future.

Bob - Many poker games played and cigars smoked on that table. Sorry but, gotta veto the wife on it not going back. It's a historic artifact and cannot be removed from it's original location.
