March 2014 Workbench Thread

Bob,
Trying to influence the fingernail polish industry?

Naw, Dave - just so much easier than using frisket paper to keep spatter from where I don't want it to go ;-)
But, now that you mention it, every waterfowler should have his nails done to look his best on those special days afield! I see a hair place near us that offers eye-lash extensions at $79.00 "Walk Ins Welcome", so mebbe there's a market for this.

Bob, awesome birds as usual.

Here is a GE I've owed a friend of my dad's for a while. I carved it over a year ago but didn't get paint on it until now. It's my first bird entirely painted in tube oils. The process makes me appreciate even more the talent on this site. I'm not sure why the black is drying unevenly, too much dryer?

Bob, watching those pintail feathers emerge from that gray blob is amazing. I'd love to watch you paint. Even blowing the picture up, you feathers appear real. Great effects.

Well, Bob, I would have to say that getting your hand splattered is worth it! What a great looking pair of Baldpates. "The Master at work!"

Bob, you probably know this already. I had a conversation with the ValSpar tech. folks a couple of weeks back. The new VOC standards lead them to drop Val-oil from their product line. I did find a case of quarts at a Tru-Value, but these appear to likely be the last of their production.

Not only did it seal decoy bodiesl well, but it sure did put a nice protective cover on hardwood keels that held up well.

Ron, I really like that teal. Thanks for posting it up.

Bob, It is really fun and honestly quite humbling watching you create your "craftsmanship" . Just looking at how clean those splits are done you cant even see the second brush stroke that creates it. Your pride in what you do it quite evident.

Andrew, I like seeing it on the big screen. I keep telling you why the black is doing that but Ill let you get your second opinion. Cant wait to see the teal up here next.

If I missed anyone else I apologize.

I am actually carving quite a bit so I will post these random images from yesterday. This one will get final sanding today and then I need to detail and sand the rigmate.

Bob,
Now that is a picture I would almost pay to see. You, sitting in the salon chair with your nails all neatly spatter painted, getting some eye-lash extensions. Yep it would be worth the 79.00 dollars just to see that!

Brandon, It's not that I didn't believe you, it's that I forgot. Also, that red breasted has all kinds of style and attitude, I love it.

Turns out I couldn't wait to see all that is lying about my work bench either. So I put them on the steps for a quick photo. The cans are to complete the rig I started last summer/fall. The teal are the first two hens of a rig of 6 green wings which will be cut to 5 once David R. takes his pic of the drakes. They are the first birds I've made my own pattern for and the first I've cut out by myself on my new band saw. This is getting more fun by the day.

Wow! Everyone's work is unbelievable this month. This is what I have to offer. This is my thirty- first bird. I can finally see I have improved since my first ones a year and half ago, but still have a long way to go.

I can assure you, watching me paint would probably be as exciting as..... well, watching paint dry ;-)

Bob~

I do not have any tails yet - but here are 2 heads:

I am playing around with some new Broadie-beak patterns. I frequently paint the raw (unsealed) heads when I am developing a new pattern to make sure I'm on the right track. I just sand them lightly then seal with my usual 2 coats of spar varnish when they are attached to the "tails" and the whole thing is ready for paint.

Question: What brush(es) do you use for your fine lines (like the feather ribs) ? (BTW: Beautiful work - as ever!)

All the best,

SJS

My bad, Bob. It's that ADD kicking in again. I started dreaming of your pintails between the first picture and the third. Nevertheless, your work is incredible.

Jeff, Great job on the hen.
Bob, I've tried many times and could never get your spatter results. Of course you do amazing things with a brush as well!
Steve, Those bills have the simplicity but finished look I strive for.
Great work everyone, John

Steve - Love the scaup heads. Great personality and attitude!

Andrew - Cans and teal are looking good!

Brandon - Can't wait to see the fishduck painted...

Keep up the good work! Pat

Been a while since I posted any work as well. Her are a couple 1/4 size GE I made for Christmas gifts.

I have also been doing a little flat work. Acrylic on canvas.
