March Whats on your workbench?

Thanks for compliments and suggestions guys. I really appreciate the feedback. I learned a lot from this decoy and have already made changes to patterns based upon things i don't like. Paint mixing seemed to be easier when i was airbrushing fishing lures....and holding an airbrush steady sure is easier that holding a paint brush steady....never knew i shook so much

As for the dots, i found a brush in my jar that works well for them. I just found it after applying 95% of the dots. I still have all my modified paint brush handles i used to "transfer" eye dots on lures but figured that process would take way too long. Might give it a go on the BWT on day...

Here is a better picture

Pat, those stamps remind me of the ones we used to stamp scale patterns on fishing lures. Pretty nifty idea. I can't wait to see them painted!

Those are really nice. Can they be purchased somewhere or are the custom made?

Pat, as I look at the bluebill headed to the DU Banquet, again, I admire your ability to mirror those older classics and their makers' painting techniques. I do well carving them, but as I paint them, sooner or later, my paint patterns get too detailed and my attempts all look like a classic decoy painted by mike pierce........I need to learn when to just say no.

This year, I am going to try it again, making a rig of St. Clair flats blacks, not exactly copying Wells, Warin, or Chambers, but including aspects of all of them. Hopefully I can get it right this time and they will have more of a classic feel..........the paint detail or lack thereof matching the classic lines of those decoys...

As they progress, I'll send you pics for suggestions, if you don't mind...........

Mike - I'd be glad to look at your birds. One thing I have learned regarding details on decoys, once you've gone there, it's tough to go back.

Kevin - to my knowledge, the stamps are not commercially made. I wish they were.

Mike, sorry for reading your stuff but---When you are done painting, put the deke about 20 yards away--what disappears really is NOT needed on a decoy, what stays, keep! You going to strongsville? if so see you and even Pat! Pat, i have some new stuff to show you

and a cork pintail for my own rig, most of the few pins we see here in CT are early and pinfeathered, and I wanted one painted that way, not in love with the finished product but it will accomplish what I want it to.

and tried my hand at taxidermy for the first time in 10 years, not great but I dont think its awful considering I've been out of practice for a long time. Will make a nice shop mount.

You guys have helped me so much and dont even know it . I want to thank you all for all of us . I know im not the only one out here and i look forward to seeing more come forward .

Very cool Rick! Glad to see you keep the tradition alive in the family!
Thanks jode . Pop tried to get me involved for years . Loosing his eye sight was hard on him and i wanted him to know he still lives on in the carving world . He taught me alot but the painting part is hard for him to show me without being able to actually do it . I want to try and track down some of his better work and post a story . We also had a fire destroy alot of keepsake stuff in the 80 s . His main album with all his work was ash ... but as in your case thank god no one was hurt . god bless !

The other day after I was asking about foredom bits, I got a PM from Carlos asking if I was actually carving something. My answer was a giant squid - I never got a response back, so I guess he either didn't believe me or it wasn't worth a response. I figgured I needed to actually post my work here as proof :). So, giant squid... and since the same guy said I was a weird bastard (that is the polite version) when I said I was looking for a Remington 7600 in 35 Whelen - here is my other project along that line that I just finished :).
