March - What's on your workbench ?

I agree! I also suspect that the vast majority of its humor would be lost on the generation that communicates via emoticon, and truncates their thought train at forty characters..

But, I grew up with Firesign Theatre via radical FM radio...

Carl- why did you choose to go mastic only and no burlap? Also, what mastic and paint did you use?

Basically because I ran out of burlap!
And I want to test out how they hold up.
I still have lots of foam, so I can experiment, if it doesn't work out, I can carve new bodies, burlap them and re-use the heads and keels.

The mastic is a 1/4 bucket of stuff I have left over from remodeling our master bath back in 2008. Its from Home Depot, not sure the brand.

After the mastic dried, all the blocks were painted with 2 coats of flat white Kilz primer.
Black is a latex flat black sample from HD. Grey is a mix of the Kilz & the black.
Bills are Bill Blue from Lock, Stock & Barrel. I bought it from Lou back in 2001 when I was in Michigan to see my sisters. Still good after all this time, as long as you keep it well sealed.

For the redhead heads, I used a flat sample from HD in a color I had them mix. Its a little too red but looks ok.

I am now a big fan of the sample size bottles from HD. For less than $3, they will mix any color you want and the latex works well on mastic/primer.

Thank you Steve and Joe. I really like carving those birds. I'll hollow it out in the next few weeks. It's actually made from sugar pine. I love how that stuff carves. My next Can bodies will be redwood more than likely. (Cheaper and easier for me to find around here.)

I have really been bitten by the canvas bug. This is my first one completed and I'm now ready to move full speed ahead.

Thank you for the open arms acceptance. I got a couple irons in the fire and going to be putting out some nice stuff in the next month or two

I just spent some time going through this thread again. What an inspiration it is. I have not had much shop time lately and love the fact that all of you are posting to help me get a fix!

Before i started visiting this site I can't remember ever seeing a canvas decoy. Is there a thread somewhere detailing the construction and building process? It's a fascinating idea and I have to imagine they are super lite

Sweet Baby Jesus Chuck, you're calling me out....lol....rather than stitch the seams, glued them with super glue professional. But I was able to get the front real nice that stitching wasn't needed

I was going to add photos of my BRANDING IRON, my CAULKING IRONS and maybe even a SHOOTIN' IRON or 2 until I saw your challenge to Mike....

So, got a PALM?????

I have only made one canvas bird - many years ago. You two may inspire me to try another someday.

All the best,

SJS

Mike, unless your gluing the cloth down to the frame, be careful of "rigid" glues as they can cause cracking....think unsupported thin fiberglass

Regardless, good job on your first canvas deek.

Search my old posts. I've put up lots of pics in the past, and as any here will say, I'm always willing to help out a fellow decoy seamstress. Check this thread highlighting my canvassing process:
