s138 E.JPGSorry about that, Here's the pic. This was used as a ice boat,A rescue boat, and for duck hunting.s133 E.JPGI have the plans if you are interested. It seems to be built like a mellon seed or BBSB

Pete: no I haven't started a melon seed yet. the plans I like are from mistic seaport museam,it fas a fuller bow.I beleave the scooter you are showing was in wooden boats years ago,a couple of friends built one,and was very heavy.they were sailed on the ice in great south bay L I would hit open water then scoot back up on the ice you had to know how to sail it pretty good or it could dive. I down loaded about 20 plus picture of the construction of a melonseed from start to finsh. best:Bill

Pete, if you still have these plans I would be interested in a copy.... May build me a ice Scooter some day.... if I don't find one to restore, and if I do the plans may help in the restoration too.

Some pics of a scooter in use.

Jack, I had no idea that duck hunting could be like this. You are a brave duck hunter. Now I am thinking about you getting out there in the wee hours of the early morning and wondering how big your flood lights are?

Al,
Thats not my scooter but I have one without the sail, which I tow out. Im not the brave soul who would sail that vessel across the bay.

I have one but I tow it out, and usually the sun is up, no need for the flood light. I use too get up at 3 am and head out into the black. However, I ran across an older gunner who had the philosophy that if you couldn't shoot ducks between 8 and 3pm then those ducks weren't worth shooting. As I got older, I realized what he was saying, and I'm that guy that show up after breakfast. When most guys are heading back, I'll be launching. The ducks are smart, they know when we leave for the morning..... But I surprise them.LOL

LI Jack, the scooter in the picture near the bellport dock has an interesting rig. I wonder how it is steered? The scooters my friends had were all steered by the jib.

Rich,
I really don't know how they steer the boat, I'm guessing shifting the individuals weight from left to right would be an option.

One day the bay may freeze over again and I may get to see one of these antiques in operation. The Maritime Museum in Oakdale have a few on display.

I prefer a Sprit rig without a jib. They were commonly seered by shifting body weight and a sharpened boat hook type pole.Just apply pressure on the side you want to turn.A oar lock mounted on the stern should work well for the pole.
