Mute Swans

Our DNR has a few folks that secretly ride around and shoot them with .22 CB, shakes/oils eggs, and makes them disappear.

They've almost gotten rid of the 1600+(estimate) we had a few years back. The yuppies and bunny huggers weren't too happy about it, but since it was done quietly most but the HSUS types have kept quiet.

Dont think they are an issue down here in Alabama, havent heard anything from any of our biologists.

Of course they gave a permit to some moron that decided to go kill swans on a busy Saturday morning in May and let them float all over a large lake. Now the DNR does it like they do out east. I was only able to take 17 out on my permit before they yanked it.

What does your state do for management, if anything?

Thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian,
It used to be simple around here until a couple years ago. We had NO CLOSED SEASON on Mute Swans because they are non-endemic and are an invasive species. They could be harvested year around with a permit and the permit was free. Trouble is........I didn't get a chance to make good on doing that when it was available. Would have been great to scull on them. The DNR used to go out in the evening and plink them with .22's to help control them. I remember telling RAS about this opportunity. By the time he had confirmed it as being true........the loophole was closed as a result of some do-gooder-idiot who doesn't understand animal control.
Now......I don't know if anything is being done.

I heard you could still get permits, but only for private lakes...they definately don't advertise the availability of these. Might be worth a call.

Thanks Guys,

I heard a rumor last weekend that the DNR will be reviewing the issue, and may go to a lottery or permit. They do expect a heavy anti turnout to voice their opposition to the management plan. I was asked if I'd be interested in giving my two cents worth to the commision.

I have always wanted to hunt Mutes, for various reasons. So I'm trying to arm myself with as much pro info as I can to bolster the reasons that I already see as pertinent.
Thanks,
Brian

Here in NY they are protected, we have jillions of them.
Anyone ever eat one?
My GGrandfather used to get the ones that hit the telephone lines, before they came to their senses and walked back to the lake. :)

If they are on decent feed, they are good....or so I've been told. ;)

The ones we killed were inedible and technically by law I wasn't allowed to eat them anyway. I'm sure it was dietary but the first time I breasted one myself and a friend that stopped by were nearly nauseous.

If there is a hearing please let me know. I can be sure to get serveral people from the different waterfowl organizations that are well spoken and cool headed to go and speak in favor.

Here in Jersey they are protected, every lake and pond has them, they have taken over

Mute swans are NOT protected by federal law, in fact they are specifically excluded from protection. If they are protected in your state it is only because of your state's actions. In Washington they are classified as a deleterious species which may be shot on sight.

I don't know how they taste but Tundra swans make great table fare.

Doug, Are you sure they are "protected" by law? I was told that the state was given permits by the feds, but chose not to release those permits.

That's the whole problem the fed allocates a swan season every year but the liberal scum that runs Jersey will not allow us to have one , Its the same thing with doves you can hunt them in ever state around us but not here the tree huggers in power list them as a song bird. Ahh but I wont have to take this abuse much longer , my house in MT is framed and ready for sheathing. LOL ,,,,,, I cant wait to get out of Jersey , sorry for the venting

You are mistaking tundra swans (a native species) versus mute swans (a non-native species). The Feds protect Tundra swans and do not protect mute swans. Mute swans are entirely under state management.
