My boy died today.

Todd,

I am sorry for your loss. "The Long Hunt" post you made about being stranded overnight was enough to tell me the true relationship you two had. Memories, good or bad, are what keeps his spirit alive.

Todd,
Sorry to hear the sad news. Losing a dog is tough. We lost our lab last September and still have not gotten over it.

Zane

Todd and Anya,
your loss is in our thoughts today and we will pause at dinner tonight to think of Alex before we eat.

It is our loss after so many wonderful stories of his hunting and exploring. Any dog should wish to have as good a run as Alex experienced. He was one heck of a friend. He will be dearly missed.

Really the only fault of a dog is that they aren't with us as long enough.

An old man and his dog were walking down this dirt road with fences on both sides, they came to a gate in the fence and looked in, it was nice grassy, woody areas, just what a 'huntin' dog and man would like, but, it had a sign saying 'no trespassing' so they walked on. They came to a beautiful gate with a person in white robes standing there. "Welcome to Heaven" he said. The old man was happy and started in with his dog following him. The gatekeeper stopped him. "Dogs aren't allowed, I'm sorry but he can't come with you."

"What kind of Heaven won't allow dogs? If he can't come in, then I will stay out with him. He's been my faithful companion all his life, I can't desert him now."

"Suit yourself, but I have to warn you, the Devil's on this road and he'll try to sweet talk you into his area, he'll promise you anything, but the dog can't go there either. If you won't leave the dog, you'll spend Eternity on this road."

So the old man and dog went on. They came to a rundown fence with a gap in it, no gate, just a hole. Another old man was inside. "S'cuse me Sir, my dog and I are getting mighty tired, mind if we come in and sit in the shade for awhile?"

"Of course, there's some cold water under that tree over there. Make yourselves comfortable"

"You're sure my dog can come in? The man down the road said dogs weren't allowed anywhere."

"Would you come in if you had to leave the dog?"

"No sir, that's why I didn't go to Heaven, he said the dog couldn't come in.
We'll be spending Eternity on this road, and a glass of cold water and some shade would be mighty fine right about now. But, I won't come in if my buddy here can't come too, and that's final."

The man smiled a big smile and said "Welcome to Heaven."

"You mean this is Heaven? Dogs ARE allowed? How come that fellow down the road said they weren't?"

"That was the Devil and he gets all the people who are willing to give up a life long companion for a comfortable place to stay. They soon find out their mistake, but then it's too late. The dogs come here, the fickle people stay there. GOD wouldn't allow dogs to be banned from Heaven. After all, HE created them to be man's companions in life, why would he separate them in death?"

Todd
It's all been said and to add to it would be redundant. We'll shed a tear with you tonight.

Hey Todd - you have touched many of us with your great stories about real adventures with a great partner - in an honest and forthright style that connected us - brought us along. Many of us have had to part with solid companions that are gone too soon. I have spent the last 4 years moving a picture from one month to the next........... I know our expressions will, in some way, help you and wanted to add my 2 cents. I hope you get another retriever soon and I hope that someday you have only the happy memories that you and Alex deserve.

[font=Verdana,Arial,Helvetica]Todd and Anya,

DAMN Tod ! Sorry for your loss. I too always looked forward to your pics and prose of your adventures with Alex. I've often said they would make a great book. I wish I had the words that could ease your pain, but as anyone who has been though this knows, no sch words exit. Only time will help ease the loss until what remains behind are the memories of special times with a special friend. Both you and Alex were very lucky to have found each other and to have had the adventures that you shared. You enriched each others lives in more ways that you can know. And in sharing these adventures, you enriched ours. Thank you !

In the end, you did the hardest thing an owner is called on to do. You were there for Alex, easing his pain and allowing him to go to a better place to await the time when you will see each other again.

Until that day, know that there are many other dogs who have made the same journey waiting to meet him. They will show him the best places to lay in sweet grass caressed by the sun. Where to get a refreshing drink from a babbling brook after a day of chasing birds in the woods. He's off running with a great pack of dogs exploring all the sights sounds and smells that the good Lord has to offer.

So, Alex, go on now. Your pain is done. Go on. Hunt em' up Alex. You've earned your rest. You will be missed.
