NDR - A month in the Mountains?

Gotta share - Most of you know that my alternate passion is archery and specifically bow hunting elk - and lately only long bows.

In the past 20 years I have only missed 2 seasons chasing the bulls of my dreams. Last year was the second time and due, as in the first missed season, to surgery.

So this year I planned another two week trip to Colorado with a couple of friends. It's an area I have hunted before and in fact have taken 3 elk off of this mountain. Very excited to get back to this spot.

In case that wasn't enough I recently found out that I and two other buddies drew coveted New Mexico tags. NM has been on my bucket list for a long time but the odds are so bad for NR hunters that I never bothered to apply before - yes, this was my first time applying! That season starts Sept 14th.

In short, I leave here in late August for the Colorado opener, hunt for two weeks and then head to NM for another 10 day hunt. WOW, I still can't believe it.

It's been a great year so far and it's only getting better.

Good to hear Pete and good luck. I am not sure if I will go elk hunting this year. I have a spot but not sure I have the time. Tags are over the counter for me. :)

That is a great shot Phil.

I spent a couple seasons guiding up in the Sawwatch Range in the 90's and I still find that the slightest whiff of pine sets me to daydreaming and wondering why I ever gave it up. I am very jealous! Hope you have a great time!

Hey, Pete,
Well maybe you will get your elk right away and then you might want to chase bluewing teal around. Seems about the same time. We'll keep in touch. Best of luck. Maybe you will see one like this.

Pete, I took these shots south of the house 8 miles away at Bosque del Apache NWR.

Way to go Pete! Now spend the summer getting into tip top shape. My hair on the back of my neck still stands up when I hear that bugling :-)

Thanks Paul. You've got some real dandy bulls up your way too. Most of my Colorado elk tags have been OTC and only recently have I needed to draw but the odds are almost 100% where I go. When you get to other states, such as New Mexico, the odds drop considerably as only 7-10% of the tags go to non-residents.

Thanks Paul, I agree, the smells of the mountains are heady and transport us back time after time.

Been thinking about you lately, hope you are doing well.

Very nice Al, thanks. Those bulls get my blood moving for sure :) Whether I actually kill an elk or not I will definitely have a good and memorable time. It'll be nice getting back to your stomping grounds again.

One thing I have learned is how to pace myself and when to take a day off to recoup. That's one of the big reasons for going on a minimum of 2 week trips.
