I've been hitting the river close to home this weekend. Couple nice catfish one evening followed by two more kept the next morning.

Then went back out this afternoon and picked up this nice walleye,,,,,, 29 inches and 9.5 lbs. my personal best yet and only 1/2 mile from home.

Nice fish! I love Walleye, but I really like Catfish too.

A lot of my friends scoff at them, and fried I tend to agree, bowever, my wife has a recipe where it's baked with a few seasonings and crushed pecans. Man, makes my mouth water just thinking about it!

How did you catch the whisker fish?

I first went down to the creek with some Berkely trout bait. Caught some creek chubs for bait, then went to the river for the cats.

Nice walleye Dave. I live 2 blocks off a river that produces some big walleyes. I never tried fishing them with creek chubs. I have access to a good chub creek. I always used chub for northerns or catfish. I may have to change tactics. Thanks for sharing.

Congratulations on the Walleye and the Cats. You've got some mighty fine eatin' there, all from what sounds like your "Home Water". Doesn't get much better than that.

Thanks guys,
I had a fun time getting that walleye to the net. Brought her to the surface three times before I could net her on the fourth try. All while running the transom mount trolling motor in current and keeping the boat under control. Needless to say I was a bit stoked when she finally was secure in the bottom of my boat.

Mike, I cropped out the mess in my backyard. A man has to have he priorities in order. :>)

Very, very nice Dave. I've been focused on saltwater fish this summer, thanks for sharing and getting my attention back on the lakes.

Nice fishes Dave! I was on the river near Bagley WI on Sunday afternoon fishing for cats and no dice. I lost a nice one. I've only fished the Miss a handful of times and I can't seem to figure it out.

I used to dread keeping catties, even though I and my family love eating them, because I struggled when filleting them. I've had good luck with the kids catching them this year, and the dread is no longer. After watching a few demo videos, I started using an electric fillet knife. It works a LOT better.

Northern Michigan is not known as a largemouth destination...

The U.P. southern Lake Michigan coast is on fire right now from Manistique to Washington Island. Several friends more than happy to send me pics of 20lb plus chinook and nice steelhead they are getting. Largest chinook I have actually seen is 34.55lbs, more along the lines of what I would expect from Lake Ontario rather than the current Lake Michigan fishery. A chinook twenty pounds or over is as strong as you are for the first few runs, particularly when you are fishing twelve pound floro. because the water is so clear now.

Kim's 25lb. chinook. Kim is the TU Region rep., she and her husband own my old Outrage 21'.

Those are dandies, Dave. If you had your lab with you and she was in the water, that is kind of duck related!

The other salmonine of the Great Lakes! My duck hunting partner's oldest daughter and her husband dragged dad out fishing...and then did some catching! Actually, Sandy used to work as a Mate on a Salmon Charter boat in Frankfort during the summer through her college years. As you can see in the background, not a salmon chop day...

Thanks Rick for posting the pic. We went 5 for 5 with some great eating to come later. What was even more special, was it was my daughter and SIL's 2nd anniversary. And they were enjoying their day, "on the water!" I've been forced to change target species, with our salmon fishery collapsing. Daughter had to get me the latest cowbells her charter captain friends use, and although they did catch fish, my old tried and true method for salmon caught 3 of our fish.
Daughter comes home from Virginia every year, taking the last 2 weeks of July, as part of her vacation days. AND she will return in October to hunt ducks. How blessed I am to share with her the Great Outdoors.
