NDR... Govt shutdown closes USAF Museum and cancels my fathers Veterans groups visit

My father served proudly in the USAF during the early days of Vietnam. After over 45 years, several of his Air Force buddies decided to get together and all visit the USAF Museum in Dayton, Ohio together. They made airline and hotel reservations and were really looking forward to this trip for the last several months, I know my Dad was like a little kid.... he couldn't wait to see his friends and the museum.

They planned to visit this week and my father flew out this morning. As of last night the museum website said they will remain open. He got together with a few friends and called me tonight to check the website, sadly I had to inform him that the government shutdown had also forced the closure of the USAF Museum. After 45 years of waiting a group a veterans wont get to see their branches museum, all because our government is inept, spoiled and incapable of functioning.

I have never been so ashamed to be an American. The way our government functions as a whole is shameful. I am staunchly conservative and Republican as our most of us here, but today both parties of our government are too blame.

That really sucks Chris. It should never have come to this. Our leader are becoming more and more disfunctional as time goes on. Both parties are to blame. If they ran a business like they run our country they would all be fired and looking for a new careers. There should be term limits for ever elected official. Maybe then they would get something done.
I hope your Dad gets to enjoy some time with his friends.

Thanks John. I am very disappointed for my father, he has been looking forward to visiting the museum for quite awhile. I will have to make a trip with him myself to make sure he gets there.

This government is terrible and it all starts from the top down.

I thought it very interesting that in DC WW2 vets broke into or pushed through the barricades their to visit the memorial in their honor. My father never got to see or my uncle who was a Normandy vet passed away just before it opened. I hope that your father enjoyed the company of his friends in spite of the government antics that are going on.

Ya... I saw that too Keith. My father is the photographer for Honor Flight Long Island, they were just at the WWII Memorial on Saturday with a group of vets from our area. I wasn't surprised to see that some barriers and yellow tape didn't stop members of the greatest generation from seeing their memorial.

Chris Hopefully your dads catching up with his fellow airmen. It's a sad day. I'm happy to see the WWII Vets were able to see the Memorial in Washington. Even if they had to tresspass. It's open 24-7 and now there putting up gates. Give me a break.

Not quite true. Two members of Congress came and removed the yellow tape and barricades and escorted the WWII vets. Probably the most constructive thing they have done in the past year or more.

What sucks the most about this shutdown is the way it is being protrayed in the main stream media. All Republicans fault, no Democrat involvement at all. Why should the Dems bother negotiating when they know the press is going to balme the other side completely. Sickens me.

That's damn shame. Make sure to say thank you from me to those vets. I hope they get together anyway.

I would express fully my opinion of our congress right now, but this is a family site.

The p.g.-rated version is that the moderate majorities of both the Republican and Democratic parties need to take control of the parties back from the far-right and far-left and leave the wacko extremists to flounder in their own rhetoric. Run off the tea party and the socialist to form their own parties and the rest of us can get on with running a govt. like it should be run...

Ronald Reagan and Tip O'Neill are rolling over in the their graves. They had serious policy and governance difference and we still had a functional govt. because they were able to compromise. Heck, even Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich managed to work together and we had a budget surplus when they left office......

Its a sad day when compromise can not be reached. The checks and balances built into our system of government was designed to keep extremism in check and compromise is fundamental to making progress.

There are lots of government services provided to the American public that may not be apparent to most people but will become apparent with the shutdown. National Wildlife refuges will be closed to hunting and fishing and birdwatching. Waterfowl hunters won't be getting wing envelopes or harvest surveys. Waterfowl population surveys are not going to get flown and therefore the data for setting seasons will be weakened. National Forests, Bureau of Land Management lands will be "closed" where possible and campgrounds shutdown. National Parks, Monuments, and Battlefields closed. National Cemeteries closed. Museums shut. Lots and lots of other services that people depend upon. Those public lands, facilities and structures will have to be looked over by the essential employees who are required to work but who will not get paid until appropriations are provided. The need is there because there are segments of our society who will trespass, vandalize, steal, damage, destroy those public properties during the shutdown. The damage done in the 1995-96 shutdown was extensive.

Odd that all these unstaffed, open-at-all-times memorials are suddenly barricaded with more temporary fencing and yellow tape than a crime scene. Also odd that members of congress are right there to move 'em as the cameras roll. I notice that they selected the right ones to set off an emotional firestorm as well.

Bob,

I agree with your thinking.
