NDR-upcoming eye surgery

I know that a lot of us on this forum are in the same demographic with aging eyes, so I thought I would ask the group. I am scheduled to have a vitrectomy and a procedure to peel scar tissue off of the macula of my left eye. The scar tissue is from several retinal tears that were repaired successfully with a laser several years ago. This epiretinal membrane, or macular pucker, is not uncommon, but sometimes progresses to where it causes blurred, wavy vision in the affected eye, which is where I am at. Have any of you been through this procedure? If so, it would be helpful to me to hear about your experience and the results. Thanks in advance.

No similar experience, but wishing you speedy recovery and better vision!

That all sounds very unpleasant. I hope you have a speedy and recovery and the best possible outcome.

Dwight~

I have not had your condition but did lose my right-eye vision almost 5 years ago to the day. A tiny particle of unknown origin blocked the artery that feeds (fed) my right ocular nerve. Since then - I was 66 - I have received numerous treatments with injections and lasers to keep my eye healthy. I see my retina specialist every 6 months - and all is fine. My Mom has had 7 cornea transplants since her 60s - and is still seeing the world and her loved ones in her mid-90s.

This is all a long-winded way of saying that we are all lucky to live in this time of truly amazing medical capabilities. I am optimistic that you will get fine care - and I wish you a rapid and comfortable recovery.

All the best,

SJS

There are a number of factors which determine the outcome, but for the most part, the membrane peeling is successful and can improve the reduced vision and distortion. The recovery is going to be longer than cataract surgery and a lot depends on whether or not they need to use a gas bubble. I've seen the visual recovery improve for even a year or more after the procedure, so be patient and optimistic.
