New Site Format Thread

Eric,

I would not support video uploads. From an IT perspective that will add storage space requirements, archiving and maintenance overhead. I would support linking and let YouTube handle that overhead.

I would keep lists of duck boat plans available for those that want to build their own boats.

Are you talking actual plans, or places to get plans, perhaps both. We definitely need a list of available duck boat plans. I've never compiled one. Would love for someone to take the initiative to do just that. I think the new format will better lend itself to such compilations. It would be a huge plus to the site if someone or multiple folks gathered the data.

On the video I hear you and recognize the possible issues. I also know video is an important means to communicate and share. The easier it is to go from phone to forum the more people will use it. Having to use YT or IG is cumbersome and discourages its use. Those methods are available now (via linking not embedding) but not many folks post video. I have to wonder if you take out the intermediary steps will it get used and be useful.

Appreciate the ideas.

Eric,

True, If you have the option on the new site to link or upload video it would cover both options and give market feedback on what is most popular.

The forum is the important thing. Resources and references would be nice to have but I have no help on getting it done other than just a search ability.

On the video question and mobile phone ease of access, I would say yes. People younger than me (65) like video, and I agree that can drive some site use and expand the base of people using it. The easier the better. Who knows, I might become a video poster myself. New and different is always good.

If you do the video upload, what would be the costs associated with bandwidth, storage, etc. as it starts to get larger. Is there an option for unlimited uploads and that is the plan that you would go with?

Seems like the biggest cost associated with websites is the bandwidth and storage. Is it possible for video upload get out of hand and we would have to pay large prices for each increase of storage and bandwidth?

Convenience is good, but with technology these days convenience comes at a cost. Just like with all the many subscriptions these days for streaming, etc. Seems like each month the price gets higher and higher. When a while back things like that were like $4.99 a month are now closer to $25 a month.

I do not mind either way as long as costs do not become a huge factor and it is decided later on that it costs to much and we have to remove that feature. Because you will still be paying the costs for the already uploaded videos, each period unless you remove them, then those posts could be irrelevant without those videos.

I just do not want to be stuck at a crossroads where costs, maintenance, etc. is a factor again too soon. Then we are dealing with what do we do with the current video storage that continues to cost to keep them even if we stop the video upload.

Just my thought on it. But I know it is hard to predict the monetary future of websites, subscriptions, etc.

I do not have the costs associated with video at this time, but for certain they are a function of storage needs. The new forum software supports video, and I can configure it such that there is a small fee to have that feature active on your account. In other words, you can upload and put video in your posts if you don't mind paying for it. If you don't want to post video there is no cost to you, and nobody pays to watch. If you think about it basically this is kind of a backwards model to YouTube (YT) and Instagram (IG), in that the folks providing the content pay, while the viewers get it for free. But there are no ads, banners, paid promotions, etc. like the aforementioned have to foot the costs. As you are all aware this site is community funded. If folks want to post video without going through YT or IG then that is a free option. In my mind our community doesn't really like the idea of going through YT or IG because rarely does anyone take those steps. At least, I think. I guess it could also be folks don't use the video feature on their phones. All of this is based on the assumption the new forum video upload and display work well. If it isn't a good system, we'll ditch the idea. I have not seen or used it myself, so I may be speaking prematurely about the possibility. It will get tested before rolling it out.

I did have a telecon with the developer yesterday we went over a lot of details. Site migration work begins tomorrow. Once the data is moved then we will work on the layout and I'll learn the admin side. Once this is done it will go live. I do not have an ETA on that, yet.

More to come. As always, thank you for your support.

Eric, I've never had an issue using my iPhone with this site being non mobile friendly but could see that it would be beneficial for others that care for such things and would help recruit people.

As for the video I'm one where I don't feel like messing with the hassle of uploading to YouTube and then linking to that video. But if you had an option to directly upload I would be open to paying for that feature if I needed to.

Honestly I have hardly ever looked at any of the other pages other than the main forum and the classifieds. When I was looking to build a boat, that has yet to happen, I did go through some of the pages of reference. But the other stuff I think I've glanced through them when I first joined years ago.

Thanks for keeping at it and working on this site to keep it around.
