new years diatribe (and a few good photos after the words)

New Years eve 2010
Is just like a blur

An alarm is ringing in my ears

In a dream I had
half ended

I set myself upright
dumbfounded

as often I am

I try to remember
something from a dream
I might have had last night

There was water and mist and evergreens
And the sun was somewhere
Elsewhere

I put on my boots and stumbled to the door
Opened it and cursed the driving rain

Connected and lit the bomber’s lights
with connections soldered on corroded copper wires
from way back in June

We’re all pulled again
through the mill town

Everyone is asleep
down the river
in the row houses just above the water line

my brother waits in the lot
with his bird dog “Kodi”

As I roll up to the pumps
A houndsman fuels up

Mike walks up and has a talk
He knows all about it

The hounds seem ready to go
Necks craned out the portals of their boxes

Noses sifting gasoline and diner food
A little girl in red rubber boots
that had a father who cared enough to bring her along

She helped her father fuel the truck

“after bobcats or coons, or are you just coming back?”
Mike Asked.
They were just getting started and about to cross the state line
To run the hounds for the very first time
In the new year

“Well good luck, you guys take good care and have fun” Mike said

We loaded Kodi and our gear,
I gave Mike a copy of a book by Mathewson

“Happy 2010” I said
“I am not very good at reading, I haven’t the patience” he remarked

“Neither do I,
you are still going to read the book”
I said

We arrived at our launch and crossed the big water
passed the lights and piers

Mike knows where I need the light to be
kodi stands up on the gunnels and lets the wind flap back his ears

We make our way through the pilings and the shoals
Across big water boiling
up and over meetings and stems of energy released
from far away

Carried out and into deep dark water

There was water and mist and evergreens
And the sun was somewhere,
Elsewhere.

Birds fluttered in
locked
and folded to the blasts

Big birds from Alberta and Saskatchewan flew and fell

The tide washed in and far back into the islands
Unstoppable and cold

The tide pushed and swelled and pulsed into all the hidden coves

In silent waves and swells that rocked the hull off of the land

Birds seldom go missing with Kodi

It makes for a long swim sometimes

There is no denying the joy that mike has when his dog brings back a retrieve

It would seem as though Kodi prefers Mallard

Really enjoyed reading your story. The pics seemed to be the dessert! Since Kodi would probably like retrieving mallards, how about the shooter?

That cracked me up, I'm with Kodi-- I can't get a buffy to taste good. They are fun to hunt!!
