Newest boat pick up/winter project

Here's the latest addition to the fleet. I'll have it with me at the Tuckerton Show this weekend. 1920s to 1940s Van sant feather edged sneak box.

It's never had a motor on it just a set of oars! It has some old fiberglass on the bottom that needs to be removed. Couple frames and deck beams need replacing.

It will be a little bit of work,But there's just something about those sweet lines that will be worth it.

Great addition to any fleet!

I love the detail on the stool rack sides. Always a plus when a bit of artistry can be combined with the practical - draining the stern deck, in this instance.

Also, am I seeing tongue-and-groove on the deck planks? I will be re-decking my "Mystery Barnegat/Model 19" this Winter, too. I have not yet pulled any boards, but have been thinking about ship-lapping the new Cedar. Have you seen either method on other sneakboxes?

Hope to see you soon. Family needs (my Mom, 96, on Long Island) will limit me to Visitor status this year - probably just Sunday morning. (But, Paul Castelli and Craig Kessler will be at "my" spot.)

In any event, expect me to ply you - and Capt. Keeney - with lots of questions.

Steve, yes I like a little added touches to the stool racks. I thought they were cool.

Yes the planking is tongue and groove. A little less than half inch thick. It is some delicate woodworking for sure!

I would assume shiplap would work also.
This is the first I have seen Tounge and Groove planking but Bobby would know better.


Looking forward to seeing you even if it's just for a little while!

Yes. I have always heard that Vansants were a top-of-the-line vessel.

When you see small touches like this you can understand why.

I also thought the planking had some nice detail.

On many not all Van Sant sneakboxs were tounge and grove deck and the added artistry on the decoy racks is a staple of there boats just like the thru hull bow eye. Unfortunately alot of decoy racks get broken and then replaced. But is nice to see added flare to it. It show a true builder that loves his work to add the details

I have a planing hull sneakbox that someone did the same tapering of planks. I have done similar when cross planking the bottom of a garvey to tighten the bottom planking.

Great boat to restore and save Jode! I'm pretty sure the tongue and groove decking was a Van sant trait. My great grandfather learned from the Van sants and his planked decks were done that way too. Hopefully there are no hidden "surprises" and I look forward to seeing it Saturday.
