Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Dog

Hi, I am thinking about getting a duck toller. My lab passed away about a year ago. I think I am ready to get another hunting buddy. I was wondering if anyone has had a toller ,if so could you give me information about your experience with this breed? I would also like some information on reputable breeders. Thanks for any help you can give me.

I've had four Tollers and currently live with three of them. My wife and I really enjoy this breed.
Have you looked at the NSDTR USA site? It will answer a lot of questions for you. These dogs are
VERY smart and will do a good job for you. Like any breed make sure your breeder has dogs doing
field work. My large male(Jeb) is an AKC senior dog ,Terra is has a junior title and Trader is one year
old and coming along nicely in the field.(he did a real nice 70 yard water blind yesterday) The training
progresses slower than most labs and they get bored with a lot of repitition so you'll need to know
your dog and keep him interested. Their size is great in a small boat, mine range from 50 to 38lbs.
They are great companions and want to be around you. If you have any specific questions I will

Thank you for the information. I just checked out the web site. I am glad you let know about the difference in training between labs and tollers that will be a great help. One question I have, do they shed like a lab ? I could not find any information on shedding. I am excited about the smaller size! (Maybe I will not stay soaked !)
 
If you want a smallish duck dog a Boykin would be easier to find.

The tollers I have seen look like a small golden to my eye.
 
HI Kirsti, I have a toller and would highly recommend the breed, they are high energy and very loyal to their people. They do require more maintenance than a lab, twice a week brushing at a minimum during the season. My girl is going to be four this January and can't see myself ever owning a different breed.

Check out the Honey Run Kennels web site, that is were I purchased mine. They are a first class kennel.

Hi BJC,
I do have a question about tollers. Do you know if anyone has a master hunter title on a toller or qualified all age with one ? My husband and I have ran field trials and hunt test with our dogs. I thought it might be interesting to do that with a toller.

Tollers do shed but not like a Lab, the hair is longer and is easier to clean up.
My wife says she will never have another Lab in the house! Their coats dry faster than most labs.
Having said that they are not wash and wear like a lab so they do take more maintenance.
I know of several master dogs and most are owned by Sue Kish in Ontario. She also has a
Female (Raisin)who runs and has WON trials. Sue is a pro trainer and works with another
pro named Piere. If you talk to her she is a no nonsense lady but we get along
pretty well. Her kennel is Foxgrove and she has a website.

I have never seen a toller in our neck of the woods, I am sure I will take some teasing from my hunting buddies.

I trained with a guy a few times that had a Toller... Nice dog and did it all... It was 2 years ago.. I can't remember the breeding... Nice Nice Dog... John

Oh boy, here we go - Ford - Chevy - Dodge syndrome. It is the same old thing. Let them do their research. If a Toller is what they want, give them info about the breed and not some other breed. Good luck with the Toller search! They are good dogs in the home and in the marsh.

You probably were with Tony Hunt. He has a couple good dogs and is a good friend of Sue Kish.
I think his guys are both from Foxgrove kennels. I think his younger dog ran Derby and is a master
or has master legs. Tony's a lot of fun.
I have a good friend who has chessies(Concord Creek) and they are good dogs but BIG. Like a
majority of the guys on this forum I don't do things like everyone else. Why else would I build a boat,
carve my own decoys, and hunt with a Toller? I'm even trying to use an old double gun with black
powder next year. I like my little dogs. They may not be right for everyone but what is?
If you go to the Mall and watch people go by for a while you will see what's NORMAL.

It is kinda cute watchnig the owners of the lesser retrieving breeds posture for second place.

Yes, It was with Tony Hunt... Great Dog and a Great guy...Tony is tons of fun.. I had a ball.. Red, my CBR, went out on a mark that Tony threw and brought back a Surf Scooter that Tony had shot during the Season... I was looking at Red coming back with this black thing and trying to figure out what my dog is doing to me.. Red gets 20 yards away and I figure it out that Tony had a frozen bag of Sea Ducks...
OOO YES !!!THEN I am going to tell you I had the best lunch... OOO MAN, This really nice lady made lunch for every one from soup, that rocked, to nuts....
I would love to spent more time with the training group... I get down at Cheltingham(sp, I think) maybe 1 or 2 times a year.. Shame it was 50 miles and traffic lights one way.. John
