Just completed a 1/2 dzn foamer & burlap redheads.
For those of you who haven't heard the story, I collected piles of oil boom inserts that washed up in the marsh after a storm during the summer of 2010 during the BP oil spill. So far I have made 2 dzn bluebills, 3 scoters, 6 redheads, 3 GE's and a buffy, all burlap over foam, and I still have 1/2 the foam billets I collected left.
Here is the latest. I used a rasp and rounded the blanks much more than the first batch I did two summers ago.
For the heads I purchased a small bottle of paint from Hobby Lobby. Two of the heads have a white primer under the red, the other has a brown primer. I like the ones with the brown primer better.
Hey Carl, I made a bunch of decoys like that many years ago and shot a lot of birds over them. I think I used clips from fish stringers for longline clips! I too like making my decoys from FREE stuff.
Nice job, John
Wanted to pop together two quick birds before Christmas so I pulled out an old pattern I love and made two of these today. Solid bodies a bit of a switch for me.
Here are some Free materials decoys I just finished.
Cork from old freezer at work, tail, head and keel from skids. All I bought was paint and eyes. John

you can watch the can float, the other two are migrating prior to that. Go ahead and shoot the can, Brandon is taking it home with him, might as well autograph it for him.
I'm guessing you are referring to the little white finger running up each side of the head. I have always "over-ridden" Mother Nature on this feature (except for a pair of cork re-paints I did for a friend). The biologist in me knows it's wrong but the artist just has to keep all the curves flowing in concert......http://stevenjaysanford.com/pintail/
Here's my rehabs, burlapped, oak keels, herters heads and latex paints. Thanks for e-mailing me the pics of your herters Steve, I tried my best to copy your paint scheme.
