Outdoor Camera Question

I'm planning on purchasing a camera to take photos while hunting, fishing, staring at decoys (mine and others), chessies in action, and duck boat gazing. A friend recommended the Pentax Optima W30, as it waterproof and compact.

Not wanting to spend money for the commercial quality cameras such as Keith and Gary use on opposite coasts, but something affordable (less than $300), and was wondering what you know about the camera suggested or perhaps have another suggestion?

I know this topic has been addressed before, but because I was not in the market, I can't remember the good advice that was offered. Thanks. Mike

Most of my shots taken while duck hunting have been with an Olympus SP570UZ. It fits in the pocket of my Drake jacket just perfectly.

I had to replace my pocket camera this past summer after the one I had at the time got drowned by too much exposure to rain during a week of kayaking. My choice for a replacement was the Pentax Optio W80. It has a few more bells and whistles than the W30 and I personally liked the layout of the buttons a little better. I chose the Pentax over a couple other brands because the Pentax had the best optical zoom at 5x compared to 3x for most others.

I haven't used it enough to give an irrefutable review of it, but I also can't say that I've found anything with it which has disappointed me. I've been happy with the images taken during my duck hunting season. It is a bit slow for action shots but I think that is typical of most pocket cameras, at least the ones I have used.

PS. I paid $260.00 back in Oct.'09 (best price I found at the time) and right now they are on Ebay at $175.00 buy it now from the same seller.

Olympus Stylus 1030SW the last couple years and im very happy with it. its waterproof, freezeproof, crushproof and shockproof. it has a nice video w/ sound function too. i think the latest model is called the Olympus Tough but still has similar functions. check it out. the posted picture was taken with this camera. best, mark

Mike, I bought a Canon D10, love using it, my hands are to big for the Olympus, which my friend uses. Both take great photos.

It's a little over $300 , I couldn't use it a lot this year because my wife had it most of the time. My first hunt and last hunt I was able to pry it away from her. I posted a few photos of my kids swiming under water, they also have a blast with the D10.

Mark and Dave -
How long does it take your cameras to process the info from one pic and get ready to take the next one? Is there a noticeable lag between hitting the shutter button and the taking of the pic?

Dave - do you know if the Pentax is freeze-proof, crush-proof, shock-proof like the Olympus?

I'm due for a new pocket camera and these are the two that I am deciding between. Can't wait to have a waterproof digital!

Thanks for any insight you provide.

I got my first dig. camera last year. I found a Fujifilm WP at wally world $135, 3x opti. 10mp. smaller than a pk of smokes. I havn't used it much yet, but it seems to be ok for a pocket el cheepo. Also waterproof to 12ft.

I use a Canon A710is when I'm out in the field. I looked at waterproof cameras and bought this one instead. My list of needs was that it had to take AA batteries so I wouldn't have to recharge at the moose camp (no electricity), decent zoom and image stabilized to reduce shake. It does all of those things. Here is a sample.

panasonic FZ28, then buy a waterproof camera bag from simms. Love mine, and when I was looking much better quaility pics than any of the waterproof cameras and a lot more features.
