Palm frond widgeon

As usual, a stunning decoy. Where do you get your fronds. You gather them yourself or buy them somewhere? Luke

Bob,

I love your decoys. Your work is simply amazing. They are an inspiration to us guys who are just starting to carve.

You sure nailed the drake baldpate, Bob. That is one fantastic frond decoy. It made me think of this photo.

Decoy looks amazing, at the risk of sounding like an idiot...... what is a frond?

Palm fronds are the dried stems of the palm tree and were used as a traditional material for decoy making in California due to their light weight, tough exterior shell, and their naturally curved shape.

.... not to mention they were a source of free materials..... The old-timers knew how to be resourceful ;-)

This is what the "raw material" looks like, Scott:

A good challenge to the imagination. No real pattern to follow. Fun to start with an idea and sketch and carve what the frond "allows" you to see and do.
