Pole Barn Construction

heck yeah it is like a house besides family time, meals and sleeping this is where you will spend your time.

Ha!! A loft and a hot plate will take care of that part of it.

Come to think of it some sort of chemical port-a-potty would be handy. Something similar to what an RV might have.

Update: Offer was made and accepted on a lot not far from my house where we intend to build a pole barn with a woodshop. The sale is contingent on the property passing a perc test. These tests don't always pass in this area so it's not a done deal but I'm hoping it works out. I should know later next week.

We'll keep our fingers crossed for the perk works out and your dream of a pole barn comes to be.

Fred Slyfield - come on and dont be shy -post pics of your shop - AKA the Washington Disneyland Parking garage. That thing is HUGE. I remember seeing no less than a 30 ft trailer, 2 20 foot boats, a bunch of quads , meat locker, work areas and my fat arse all fit in there.

Eric, good luck. I've shown you a couple of these shots privately but here is some more progress. Unfortunately I won't get back to the farm to make more progress til mid-September. This is about 1 years worth of progress. Its 36 feet by 48 feet with 14 foot walls, 10 foot doors and an upstairs storage space that is 24 by 36 over two bays. Plenty of room for the Bankes, toys and gear. Yes I epoxy painted the floors before I got things too dirty or filled with gear. I had it wired for 200 amp service in two circuits. The lighting is 100% LED. 250 watts of power lights the whole place like daylight and the fixtures are good for 25000 hours. I will slowly work at finishing the inside on trips home from the big city.

Eric,

I woiuld like to back-up what Wendell Avery said. You will NOT regret building this structure. I too had my Whaler sitting out, covered up with three big blue tarps, over a 2x4 super structure, to shed snow and weather!

My shop started out as a 24'x24' staructure. I laid it out on 1/4" graph paper, and had a cutout, similar to what an interior decorator uses to plan a furniture layout in a room, of every boat, auto, toy I owed at the time.

When it didn't all fit into the 24x24 size, I opened it up to 32' X 32'. The day we set up to dig the footing, my buddy pulled the back two stakes and moved it back 6'! He said that I'd never be sorry with a bigger shop. Whenever he comes over, we go out for a beer and his "FREE" lunch. I cannot thank him enough for doing that.

Also Eric, make sure that you get a good air compressor for your shop/carving area. an 80 gallon, two stage, with cast iron cylinders. You will not be disappointed. Air tools are cheap and the longer you use them, the cooler they get. Also invest in a ceiling gas heater if you have a smaller area you want to heat. I will post pics of my air set-up later this week.

Free beer AND a free lunch - I'm coming back.

I've been in Art's "structure". He still needs more room. Go as big as you can and you will fill it up. Not everything in life is an investment. We earn our income to enjoy it as well as save it for the furute. My opinion.

It passed the perc test and I closed today. I'm the proud owner of a 1/3 acre lot and soon to be location of my woodshop and storage pole barn.

Cool, something else to mow and maintain. :>) :>) hehe As Lou said, we expect pictures.

Congrats Eric. In your building don't forget to have electric door lifts installed on your vehicle doors and extra controls in your cars or trucks. Pretty handy at 3 a.m. on your way to a blind.

Thanks guys. Not sure when we break ground, probably won't until the defense budget is resolved and the debt ceiling issue dealt with, but it's good knowing I've got a place to start when I'm ready.
