Restoration Thread and Interesting Finds on the Late 1800s Scull

Next pics should be of a wet boat and you in it. Wow it sure goods great

I'll probably give her a float next weekend. I've got an oar from our own Steve Wheeler and I also have a Jim Whitney oar coming from Shaw & Tenney that should be here this week.

Thanks again,
Brad

Put her on the trailer yesterday!

Finished up the motor mount, made a neoprene gasket for under the mount so it doesn't rub up the decking. Forgot about how far the transom stem protruded so the first hole in the center would not have allowed the nut to go on. Should be plenty sufficient to handle the 29 lb Suzuki 2.5 hp outboard.

Floor boards are painted and in. Also the little front cross piece that was on the original boat is installed. Not sure of is purpose but it seems you could lay your gun barrel on it or walk the boat around in the water by it.

Going to back her in the water tomorrow am! I need to see how its going to float to figure how much weight is needed in the bow. I'm going devise a little lead sled that will push under the deck to the bow to pull it down when sculling or move back when under way.

Thanks Jim. I know, I know! Time constraints are going to keep me from rowing 5 or 6 miles here on the lake to hunt. I did make the mount so it is easily removed by removing three carriage bolts.

Nice restoration... Motor Mount, great. We are not getting any younger, with it the boat will get alot of use. Old school is great, but using out heads to make a nicer day of hunting is it...
Last year my brother, myself and my nephew did the blind, decoys etc. 73, 69 and 45 doing the work, gotta be a better way... We use modern tools also.

You did do a very nice job on your boat and it looks fanatic in the water, It sure came a long way. from where it started You should write an article about restoring it for Hunting & Fishing Collectibles Magazine. I am sure Stan would love an article. Readers would love to see it.

Regards, Jim

Thanks for the idea Jim, I contacted Stan and he was most definitely interested. Guess I'll add that to my plate of things to get done!

Took her out for a few minutes last Saturday morning. It was a little breezy to be learning how to scull! Haha!

The good: she is a surprisingly stable float, tracks very well when paddling, slices right through the water and doesn't look too need much weight for pulling the bow down .

The bad: it's going to take some serious practice to scull. Although I'm really good at rocking in place and moving the bow from side to side.

The ugly: put my hand/weight on the center removable floor board when I was situating myself and cracked it right down the middle. May have to go with poplar or oak for the center piece and leave it closer to 5/8 vs. 3/8.
