Rooster! NDR -- updated 1-1-2017

Hey, I know that place......
Nice pictures and story Tim. Love South Dakota. I was unable to make the DeSmet pheasant gathering on opening weekend this year. Figures it was a good year. Not sure I'll be invited back next year as maybe the not as good years will be blamed on my presence.

Thanks guys.

The video of that hunt https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkO1pn3xaQY I know many pointer guys would say Deuce is a 'Meat Dog' because he doesn't work properly on a couple of them but wild roosters don't always play nice with pointy dogs. I'd give him a switch blade for the fight if he had thumbs. If they sit still like the first one he will stay on point forever.

Mark,
I haven't heard how the hunting has been up around DeSmet this year. I know that area hasn't been what it was before about 2010, hopefully they are coming back. It's strange around here. Where there are birds there are plenty of them but there is much less habitat for them. For the last two years people who travel a lot on back roads keep telling me there are no birds around here because they never see any on the roads. It sure isn't like it use to be but if you get out and walk the birds are there.

You just need to make sure they know you have lots of beer and food. That's the easiest way to keep an invitation. :)

Very nice. I had no idea it was possible to hunt upland birds without busting through thick brush with orns, burrs, and things that want to poke your eyes out. Those pheasant hunts seem very gentlemanly. LOL.

As for a "meat dog", having grown up with "scruffy Spingers" for partridge and ducks, I always thought that was the ideal.

Boy or boy, Tim, these additional photos are spectacular. Thanks so much for them. I love your pup, Deuce.

Another update.
Hopefully the upcoming cooler wet weather will make the birds hold better. While Deuce does a great job of tracking birds it is more fun to have pretty points. Did get a couple of those yesterday but only after some good tracking by him.

I nearly screwed up the last one when I didn't trust his nose as much as I should have. My brain doesn't hold a candle to his nose.
I'll get the video up soon.

Excellent!!
Loved watching him work. Great pup!
I'm guessing by how he pointed & then tracked that first bird repeatedly it was a runner?

The first 2 both ran on him, or at least ran out of our way as we got to them. The second one probably went 200 yards from first scent to flush. The first one does look like it was right ahead of him most of the way. Right now most of them would rather run then hold and fly. We've had a few when we could see the grass moving from the bird in front of the dog. It sometimes makes us worry its a skunk or raccoon.

Tim,
I really like that picture. It is very similar to one I took 20+ years ago at Big Stone NWR. Thanks for sharing and bringing back memories of old dogs and friends!

I haven't taken many photos lately but have made a couple more videos.

We had some snow the week before Thanksgiving. Made for a short time of tromping through cattails. It can make for a short hunt but it's not usually an easy hunt.

Video of the birds I shot, Deuce really did a good job of finding a couple birds I didn't hit too well.

A few days later it all melted. Deuce had a nice late day point with the sun setting to the right and a rooster flushing to the left. This is how every day in the field should end. It was my final bird for the limit that day.

Deuce was hurting after 3 long days of hunting over Thanksgiving. With several dreary wet days in a row we ended up taking off a whole week for him to recuperate. We didn't go back out until Sunday. We ended up only running into one rooster but it made for an interesting (but long) video. This proves that a dog is much more important after the shot. Deuce earned his feed (and his 2/3rds of the bed) on this one.

He is the main reason for the shooting streak I've been on this year. It might be those Fiocchi 1 1/5oz steel too. Maybe I can get on their pro staff. :) After it is done I'll review my notes and videos to see just how much I have shoot. I do know that it is something like out of the last 21 roosters I have shot at 19 have made it to my vest in the past month. One I cleanly missed on a longer shot and the other did make it into my vest for a little while because it was shot a millisecond before I pulled the trigger so I hit air above it...Deuce still retrieved it to me.

Now we have some very cold air moving in but no new snow. At least it should freeze up all the wet spots. Hopefully we can get out once this weekend when it slightly warms up.

BTW There were a lot of ducks and geese heading south today. You guys in the south should be seeing some new birds soon.

Great post Tim,Deuce did himself proud.
What gauge gun are you using in that open country? Was that Indian or blue grass you were hunting in?
Thanks,Bill.

Thanks guys. It's been a fun season so far with Deuce.

Bill,
I'm shooting a 12ga Franchi Affinity. I'm really liking this gun. I'd still like a little lighter 20ga. Nearly all the birds I have shot this year have been close enough that a 20 would not limit me much, even with steel shot. One of the perks of hunting over a pointing dog.

I'm not really up on all my grasses but I do think there is a lot of Indian grass in those last areas. When I'm hunting closers to home there is a lot of switchgrass and big bluestem. There was also plenty of Canadian ryegrass in the last video. Not my favorite thing to hunt around but most areas have it now. In fact Deuce has a vet visit scheduled for later today because he seems to have something in his ear. I'm hoping just a scratch and not one of those rye grass seeds. I'm a little bit of a worrier when it comes to him so it might be nothing but better safe than sorry.

Tim

Nice one Craig. That is the best angle for a flush so the bird can be seen well. I hope you hit it. ;)

I've been following this thread all fall when I had internet, but haven't posted a thanks. Lot of fun pics and videos here, I hadn't watched the videos, but have now. Pretty fun to watch the pup work and some nice looking areas to hunt.
